Official account of Somalia’s Office of the Chief Trade Negotiator (OCTN) | Led by H.E. Sadiq Ibrahim | Advancing WTO accession and global trade integration.
I had an excellent meeting with WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in Doha, where we reviewed Somalia’s progress toward WTO accession, including encouraging outcomes from the recent WTO mission to Mogadishu.
We discussed the next steps in our accession process, ongoing trade reforms, and the importance of continued WTO support as Somalia works toward full membership. I appreciated the Director-General’s personal commitment and constructive engagement.
Following the successful @wto mission to Mogadishu last week, happy to meet 🇸🇴Ambassador Khadra Dualeh in Geneva to report on productive meetings & good progress accomplished w/ #Somalia's accession team. Glad to receive her positive feedback & always grateful for her support🙏
🇸🇴 A landmark visit! The @wto Secretariat’s first mission to Somalia, jointly with @ITCnews, brought national institutions together to advance accession priorities, address technical gaps & build momentum towards WTO membership.
Appreciate the support: @FCDOGovUK & @ITCnews
Pleased to welcome 🇸🇴Somalia’s negotiating team, led by Chief Negotiator Sadiq Ibrahim, for a two-day training in preparation for 1st WP meeting on WTO Accession. Joined by EAC Secretariat @jumuiya, we had productive discussions on 🇸🇴trade integration.
SNBS at Somalia’s First WTO Accession Working Party Meeting
SNBS Director General, Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed, joined a high-level Somalia delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister, H.E @SalahJama at Somalia’s first Working Party Meeting for WTO Accession—a historic milestone in the country’s journey towards integrating into the global trading system.
Speaking at the event, Dr Abdisalam noted that as Somalia aligns its trade and economic policies with WTO standards, SNBS plays a critical role in providing reliable economic and trade data—essential for WTO negotiations. “Accurate statistics on economic performance, trade flows and investment trends will support Somalia’s case for accession and ensure informed decision-making”, observed the DG.
With its strategic geographic position and recent accession to the East African Community (EAC), Somalia is positioning itself as a key player in global trade. WTO membership will enhance market access, attract investment and strengthen Somalia’s role in the international economy.
SNBS is committed to supporting data-based policymaking so that Somalia’s economic data meets international standards, reinforcing the country’s pathway towards WTO membership. @AbdisalamHumbul@abdirahm_omar

There was a spotlight of Accessions during the Public Forum. Happy to receive H.E @SMirziyoyeva Assistant to the President of Uzbekistan and Deputy Prime Minister H.E Jamshid Khodjaev, to receive an update on Uzbekistan’s Accession which seems to be proceeding successfully.
Somalia has also kick started its Accession process with the appointment by H.E President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Chief Negotiator H.E Mr. Sadiq Abdikarim Haji Ibrahim and the new Ambassador to the WTO and UN Institutions H.E Ambassador Khadra Dualeh. Happy to receive them both. We stand ready to work hand in hand with Somalia to facilitate its accession process.
WTO UPDATE #Somalia#Somalia’s Chief Trade Negotiator to the WTO met with Mr. Ratnakar Adhikari, Executive Director of the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) on the sidelines of the WTO’s Public Forum, where they discussed support to Somalia’s WTO accession process and ongoing trade reforms including capacity building and training in partnership with TRAPCA.
In Luzern, Switzerland 🇨🇭 , President @HassanSMohamud chaired a roundtable discussion on peace, security & economic dynamics, attended by representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia, @InterpeaceTweet and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In his opening remarks, the President highlighted ongoing peacebuilding efforts in Somalia under his vision of ‘Somalia in Peace with itself and Peace with the World’. He also emphasized the importance of @wto membership and the role of trade in addressing fragility and economic growth.
President Hassan further underscored the Government’s commitment to advancing peace and stability through the @Trade_for_Peace concept. He emphasized efforts to consolidate reconciliation at both state and national levels, and ongoing stabilization efforts aimed at restoring crucial citizen centred services to help communities in newly liberated areas build sustainable and secure livelihoods.
Great news #Somalia has cleared all dues to the #WTO 'World Trade Organisation' that have accumulated over 30 years, using its own resources, #Somalia's accession to the WTO is absolutely necessary for our country to benefit fully from, and exponentially expand our international trade.
