Today, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations addressed the UN Security Council during an emergency meeting convened in response to reports concerning Somaliland–Israel mutual recognition.

The United States made the following points clear:

1-Israel, as a sovereign nation, retains the right to conduct its diplomatic relations independently.

2-The convening of today’s meeting highlights a double standard when compared to ongoing international efforts related to the recognition of Palestine.

3-With respect to Somaliland recognition, the United States has no announcements to make, and there is no change in current U.S. policy.

Key clarifications:

-The United States did not object to Israel’s decision to engage diplomatically and to the recognition of Somaliland.

-The statement “no change in U.S. policy” was made without elaboration and without explicit reference to Somalia’s sovereignty claims.

#Ethiopia- #Somaliland - President Muse Bihi Abdi in Addis Abeba for state visit

Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi arrived in #Addis_Abeba, Ethiopia for state visit. He is expected to meet and discuss with senior government officials.

President Bihi’s visit came two days after a landmark agreement reached between the leaders of #Somalia and Somaliland to resume dialogue aimed at resolving long-standing issues between the two sides.

Under the mediation of Djibouti’s President, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, the leaders of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and President Muse Bihi Abdi, convened in Djibouti and agreed to lay the groundwork for resumption of talks, which were last held in June 2020 attended by the leaders from both sides and high level representatives including from Ethiopia.

Up on arrival at Bole International Airport earlier today, President Bihi was received by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Demeke Mekonnen and other high-ranking government officials. AS
