Happy Labor Day. Today, I remember the sacrifices brave workers of the past made so the rest of us could have a shot at the American dream.

The 8 hour work day. The weekend. Minimum wage. Lunch breaks. None of it was handed to us. We fought the robber barons back then to make lives better, and we'll do it again today.

A good paying union job in the trades allowed me to provide for me and my family. Every student in America should be given the same opportunity to have a good, secure middle class life.

Here’s what we can do to make that a reality:

✅Offer AP credit for advanced shop classes so students don’t have to choose between having a more competitive transcript and exploring a trade in high school

✅Pass an updated Carl D. Perkins funding bill to give school districts and postsecondary institutions more resources to add, improve, and expand career and technical education classes

✅Protect and expand President Trump’s Workforce Pell Grant so students of low income families can more easily access an education for the trades

✅Expand Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) training programs so individuals, and even soon-to-be ex-prisoners, can earn a GED while learning a trade

✅Ban members of Congress and their spouses from trading stocks or becoming lobbyists after they leave office

✅Make it illegal for drug companies to charge Americans more than what they charge in other countries for the same medications

✅Cap how much utility companies can increase rates for electricity

✅Require data centers to pay the full cost of construction and electricity so Ohioans don’t pay higher utility costs

✅Cut taxes on working people and make the rich pay their fair share
