The Cowardly Silence of Igbo Governors in Biafra History Month

The month of May marks Biafra History Month throughout the old eastern region in Nigeria which constituted Biafra from May 1967 to January 1970. Biafra as a nation was short lived in its first inception because the republic lost a war waged upon it by the Nigerian state which refused to let it go, after Biafra seceded as a result of the incessant killing of Igbo people in other regions in Nigeria. When Nigeria was unable to weaken the Biafran defence as easily as they hoped, they resorted, with the aid of Britain, to, a genocide which led to the starvation of over over 3 million children. After the genocide, the Igbo people were poorly reintegrated into Nigeria, and today, over 54 years after the war was said to have ended, the same issues which led to the war are still recurrent and the marginalisation of Igbo people and ethnic discrimination in the political sphere has remained a constant.

One of the things which puzzles me the most is our nonchalance as a people, towards history, but especially, the deliberate efforts of Igbo political leaders towards anything concerning Biafra. All over the world, the Jewish Holocaust is commemorated, and all Jewish leaders are adept in making sure that the tradition of its commemoration is kept; and even in Africa, the Rwandan Genocide is commemorated too, and it is not uncommon for Nigerians themselves to go to pilgrimage there. In Nigeria, the Biafran genocide is overlooked, because the wrong meted on Biafrans is not even acknowledged. And Igbo political office holders, especially the Governors of the five southeastern states, have been cowardly in the face of this attempt to rewrite history. At Voice of the East, we have spent the entire month, writing, and posting contents about Biafra, and not even one Governor has made any statement, endorsing the month, the history, the reflection of which holds a lot of lessons for our people.

It seems that instead of the Igbo Governors acting like leaders working to provide true governance for their people, and for their liberation, they are acting like accessories to the oppression of their people. Neither Hope Uzodimma, Chukwuma Soludo, Peter Mbah, Francis Nwifuru and Alex Otti have had anything to say about Biafra History Month. This is symptomatic of a deeper problem, of having political officers that have been so subdued that they are all too eager to surrender to the oppression of their people, and even partake in it, for the benefit of their political careers.

The result is that the marginalization of Igbo people is being consolidated and the consciousness which helps us fight it at the level of citizenry, up to the government is weakened. Igbo political leaders have to ask themselves, what purpose exactly are they serving for the Igbo people. I have often heard side talks that the government makes a conscious effort to avoid people who in any way, concern themselves with Biafra. My stand is that the importance of Biafra as a historical event which altered our trajectory as a civilization forever, and the consciousness that remembering it brings cannot be overemphasized. A people who refuse to study their history and learn from it, are doomed to repeat it. Igbo people in Nigeria, by and by have become endangered species. With our properties threatened and constantly under attack in big cities like Lagos, and with a growing instinct for cultural and local renaissance, there is the need for the people to be conscious of Biafra, to guide our knowledge of interaction with Nigeria, so as not to aid our own marginalization.

This has been the main reason why IPOB and other self-determination groups have sprung up. And Igbo governors instead of trying to create a dialogue to discuss these issues, have instead resorted to aiding violence against our people.
