Just to clarify my thinking here, I'm not saying Jer intentionally fed Huck coffee. But I don't think any of this is a huge leap of imagination - although all allegedly and in my opinion etc:

1) Jer feeds Huck dry food, because it's easier. A bowl of wet food needs to be replaced more frequently than a bowl of dry food. Bowls used for wet food also need more cleaning than those used for dry food. Jer would be likely to go for whatever's easiest because he's lazy. Refilling a bowl every day also takes effort, so an occasional (perhaps weekly) food mountain seems entirely possible, despite being a bad idea.

2) Dry dog food comes in bags similar in shape to the coffee bags that Jer most likely has around the house.

3) Given the size of the house, Huck's food is probably in a dedicated area for Huck's stuff, rather than in a high traffic area, meaning that if the bowl is empty Jer is less likely to notice.

4) Dry food runs out or goes bad. Huck is hungry but Jer doesn't know there's a problem. Huck goes looking for bags similar to what he's seen his food being served from before.

5) Huck finds a bag of coffee.

6) Huck eats the coffee.
