Get your abstracts in for EGU - if you’ve done any recent Southern Ocean field work that investigated the connection between clouds and biological activity we want to hear from you!
@piccaaso_tweets is pleased to have our first @EuroGeosciences session open for submission! ‘Biological influence and atmospheric processes of cloud formation over the Southern Ocean – recent and upcoming initiatives’. https://t.co/bTs3772csY /1
Our #RVInvestigator sets off today on the longest voyage in its 10-year history to the Southern Ocean and sea-ice edge.
The aim of the 60-day voyage is to improve our ability to anticipate the impacts of future climate change.

PhD alert! With @that_Vancey and the @UGrenobleAlpes I'm going back to my roots of synoptic climatology and precipitation but this time in Antarctica! We have three projects to choose from looking at how extreme weather impacts Antarctica.
There are 4 exciting PhD opportunities being offered this year in partnership with @UTAS_ through @aufrande

AAPP PhD student Zhangcheng Pei is lead author of his first paper, assessing the ability of a climate model to properly simulate clouds over the Southern Ocean. It’s published while he’s at sea, 200nm west of Macquarie Island where his data came from.

My first ever paper has been published! In this paper, we evaluated the cloud radiative bias in the ACCESS-AM2 model against the ground-based observations at Macquarie Island. Take a look👇!

We are looking for campaign reports, datasets, ideas to boost collaboration or any other projects that contribute towards that PICCAASO goals! (e.g. https://t.co/t6626lwosN) Abstracts due 10th Jan - looking forward to seeing some of you there! /2
How cool are Southern Ocean clouds? Supercool! Check out our article for kids on why these clouds are both supercool and super important! https://t.co/WjDMKicm8V @FrontYoungMinds@MarcMallet@Ant_Partnership
1⃣ This recent view of #Antarctica is from a satellite that scans the intensity of microwave emission. Why is this important? These brightness temperatures show the e̲x̲t̲e̲n̲t̲ of sea ice. But t̲h̲i̲c̲k̲n̲e̲s̲s̲ of sea ice is notoriously difficult to read from space.

Join myself @MarcMallet and the @Ant_Partnership for a PhD project on modelling cloud-aerosol interactions over the Southern Ocean in a high resolution atmosphere model! Send your students my way!! https://t.co/5aqSutir0K
I learnt a lot too!! There is so much we can do with machine learning when it comes to existing large data sets and known problems - it can definitely ‘shine a light’ 😂 ☀️ ⛅️ ☀️
🚨 Excited to share new work! 💻🌞🌏🌊 We used machine learning with #ERA5 to more accurately simulate sunlight over the Southern Ocean. I learned a lot during this project and can't wait to see what's next.🔗: https://t.co/qJ8B7kJQUX #ClimateScience#machinelearning @AMS_AIES
😎 Our AAPP researchers from partners @AusAntarctic, @BOM_au & @IMASUTAS use #MachineLearning to simulate solar radiation in the Southern Ocean - crucial to improve weather and #climate modelling.
👏 just published in #AIforEarthSystems @AMS_AIES @ametsoc

Our most recent work - exploring how well the ACCESS model simulates clouds in the Southern Ocean! This is the beginning of hopefully a large body of work - so watch this space!

Flooding this week has affected important agricultural regions in Victoria. In this Conversation article I write about what it means for agriculture and how farm businesses are adapting to climate change and increasing risks of extremes. #agriculture#climate#adaptation
