🚨New paper alert🚨Need to rethink South Korean democracy: not linear backsliding, but a "rollercoaster". The real culprit? Constitutional design + chaebol dominance. Reform of executive–legislative relations is overdue. Open Access

Spoke to the NYT on the danger of reading too much into Son Heung-min’s interview photo — and of fuelling South Korea’s gender divide. I’d gladly carry an umbrella & interview Son any day. Don’t need a man to hold it for me. https://t.co/0izwxdUgaO

I spoke to @Reuters on Gen Z’s gender divide and the future of democracy. They’ve released an in-depth podcast episode—highly recommend a listen! #GenZ #GenderDivide #Democracy #SouthKorea

🚨 New publication🚨

Soohyun Lee and co-authors analyse the obstacles to progressive reform in the South Korean labour market under president Moon Jae-In 🛠️🇰🇷

🚨My new paper 🚨
Why did social concertation during the Moon Jae-in government falter under seemingly near perfect conditions? We point to the unlikely alliance between labor market insiders and outsiders undermining social concertation efforts in Korea.

🚨 Representation in Japan's 2024 Lower House election 🚨

A record 73 women (15.7%) were elected Sunday, up from 45 (9.7%) in 2021 and surpassing the previous high of 11.6% set in 2009. The CDPJ led with 30 women, followed by the LDP (19) and DPP (6). https://t.co/2rbEbxk4jI

Was an honour to discuss this book by @ProfPatOConnor. I still remember her very encouraging remark “if Ireland can change, so can South Korea”. A proper woman? Certainly a must read!

[Pat O'Connor @ProfPatOConnor]

Great London Launch of ‘A proper woman? One woman’s story of success and failure in academia’ at Kings College. Perceptive comments by Soohyun Lee and great questions from audience.
Tks to Linda Mc Kie; Jelke Boesten and Erin Agostino who made it happen @KingsSSPP @GenderKings

@RyotaMugiyama So looking forward to reading your next paper! FYI, this is my paper where I made a similar argument, although ours highlights the perception of permanent insecurity even within the labour market insiders.

Glad to see similar research on Japan re: economic insecurity & dating/marriage. But wonder how East Asia fare compared to Europe & North America re: the impact of economic security & partnership. I fear East Asian societies might be more obsessed with economic security. 💰💰

[Ryota Mugiyama @RyotaMugiyama]

My paper has been published in Social Science Research! This study showed that unemployment and nonstandard employment are negatively associated with entry into non-cohabiting romantic partnerships, not just entry into marriage from a partnership.

@KunLeeSoPol It is sad that now Korea is leading these undesirable trends!

@APHClarkson I met a North Korean refugee in London long time ago. Although he had been in the NK army he was shorter than me. And you know how tall I am! Never met a man shorter than me before. Their elite unit might have been fed better though.

Nurseries are almost free in South Korea to begin with… But sadly Japan & Korea have much lower fertility rates than UK.

This government will deliver a sea change in early education.

I’ve had the privilege to visit Japan and the Republic of Korea to understand their innovative approaches to both technology and the early years.
