The cornerstone of South Hall, the first building on the @Cal campus, was laid on October 9, 1872. When it opened in 1873, South Hall was home to the library & to laboratories for agricultural, physical & natural sciences. It also held the office of the UC President, 1899-1906.
The first laboratory on the @Cal campus in 1874, the year after the University moved to Berkeley. Located in South Hall, the lab was shared by the departments of Chemistry and Agriculture. In the photo is Willard Rising, the University of California's first Chemistry professor.
The @Cal campus in 1888: North Hall, the Mechanics Arts Building with a small machine shop next to it (which later became the Radiation Laboratory), Bacon Hall, South Hall and old Harmon Gymnasium (behind the trees). Only South Hall still stands.
On May 16, 1917, a farewell ceremony was held for North Hall, built in 1873 as the 2nd building on @Cal's campus. Its destruction was formally begun when the banister of front steps was sent crashing to the ground. The crowd then moved to the dedication of the new Wheeler Hall.

The first football game on the @Cal campus was played on February 14, 1885 on West Field, now the site of the Life Sciences Building. The opponent was a San Francisco football club, the Merions. Final score: California 13, Merions 0.
