Almost a year has passed since Unite’s retired members achieved a huge win on winter fuel – forcing the UK Government to U-turn on its cuts to the winter fuel allowance.
Almost one year on, local authorities are seeing cut after cut – hollowing out their budget for social care meaning the astronomical cost of care is being foisted onto the most vulnerable. There is currently no limit on how much a person can spend on social care in their lifetime, with some facing costs of over £100,000.
Meanwhile, council care facilities are closing, the standard of care at private providers are plummeting and staff are paid a pittance.
As we showed with Winter Fuel – Unite will not take this attack on our retired members and the staff who care for them lying down.
We need fair funding for council delivered care, a fair wage for workers and a quality service that meets the demand.
And we are ready to take this fight to the doors of the decision makers themselves to get what retired people across the UK deserve.
