“Man cannot see God and live.” (Exodus 33:20)
That is, man cannot intellectualise the divine essence, for that would imply spatial location whereas God, in His essence, is beyond location.
Yet God created man for fellowship: a relationship freely willed, an outpouring of His eternal love toward the beloved.
Through Christ, the one Mediator between God and man who, in His person (hypostasis), unites divinity and humanity without confusion we are granted access to God.
Christ is the Hijab, the Iconostasis: only through Him may man approach the Father. The veil in the temple, the hijab, separated the faithful from the Holy of Holies (quds al-aqdâs). So too, Christ, the eternal Word and Son, is mystically that hijab the One who both conceals and reveals, and by whom we truly enter into the presence of the Father.
