Just got back from an intense week at @EFDevcon in Buenos Aires: two panel discussions, a talk on the future of smart contract auditors, an Agent Arena workshop, and judging the @ETHGlobal Hackathon. This year Devconnect genuinely felt like an Ethereum World’s Fair — fewer conversations about some distant future and more about products already live in production and moving real money.

My core takeaway: @ethereum still looks like the most serious ecosystem for long‑term adoption, especially in decentralized finance. That doesn’t mean other ecosystems don’t stand a chance — but the maturity of standards, depth of infrastructure, and concentration of developers are still very much on Ethereum’s side.

That said, the story of scaling through L2s is far from solved. In my view, there was a strategic misstep: the ecosystem got a massive technological boost but at the cost of a severely fragmented UX. Users don’t fully internalize that L2s are Ethereum — but they very clearly feel the risks of bridges and liquidity fragmentation. I still expect this to be fixed, simply because too many strong teams are working on it to leave things “as is.”

The second major vector that really crystallized for me is onchain agent coordination, especially financial agents: standards like ERC‑8004 and payment protocols like X402 could become the base “operating system” for how agents move liquidity and interact with each other over the coming years. I plan to focus closely on this intersection of agents, payments, and DeFi.

And of course, my main topic — AI auditing of smart contracts. What not long ago looked like “a toy that occasionally finds something” is now turning into tools that reliably catch serious issues and are already used by both auditors and developers — sometimes surfacing things humans miss. It was great to reconnect with people building products that truly change how we use DeFi and to feel like part of that process.

This is complete nonsense if someone says that AI-audit is sufficient. Overall, web3 is in a situation where an audit or several audits are not enough, because AI+Experiences Hacker combo is creative enough to find new ways to exploit even code that has been battle-tested for 5 years. There is no more battle-tested code. We need to write an AI-white hat hacker that will conduct such a number of checks that no human auditor could perform in a reasonable amount of time.
