BREAKING -Raw Video: Explosion triggers 1-mile evacuation zone in Roseland

Fire and debris are the main concerns after a plant explosion near Roseland Elementary.

Students are being transported to #Amite for pickup. No injuries reported.

Officials have expanded an evacuation zone and shut down roads after a reported explosion Friday morning at the Smitty’s plant near the intersection of Highway 51 and Highway 10 in Roseland.

Emergency responders say the evacuation radius now covers one mile due to concerns about fire and debris, not chemicals. The #Tangipahoa Parish Emergency Operations Center continues to assess the situation.

As a precaution, the Office of Homeland Security has recommended the evacuation of Roseland Elementary School. Students are being bused to the Central Office in Amite, where parents and guardians can pick them up.

“The safety of students and staff is at the top of our priority list,” school officials said in a statement. “Please be patient and work with us during this event.”

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office will provide updates as they would hold press conference at 4 p.m.

The company's online profile says it has bulk storage tanks on site capable of holding 8.7 million gallons of material and is serviced by three railroad spurs.

The Roseland Elementary School is about 4,000 feet from the blast site. The Tangipahoa Parish School Board sent school buses to ferry students to the board office in Amite, about 3 miles miles away.
