It’s interesting that the article says the quiet part out loud. Putin thinks he will end up like the Romanovs if the war ends without the complete defeat of Ukraine, which is why no peace talks are possible. He is simply uninterested.

Although, it gets wrong the "Donbas" part. The goal is to occupy Ukraine, not one of its regions.

Far too little discussion that the main assistance given to Russia this year came from the United States.

Russia was on the ropes, with oil prices heading into 40's, Ukraine getting enough interceptors. Then Trump suicided US and other nations' weapons supplies, sent oil prices soaring and took sanctions off Russia just long enough for them to sell off the record amount of stranded floating crude oil at top prices.

Now Kyiv is bring freely devastated, 24/7 massacres and the US whining about Ukraine hitting ships on the Black Sea.

Trump is purely Putin's dog.

Every socialist system produces this. Central planners seize control of production and distribution, collapse the price system, and generate chronic shortages for the population at large. Then, because the ruling class still requires functioning goods, they quietly reconstruct a market: one denominated in foreign hard currency, insulated from the wreckage they created domestically.

This is the system working exactly as the logic of concentrated power dictates, not corruption layered on top of an otherwise workable system. The Kim regime earns hard currency through weapons sales, narcotics trafficking, and cyber theft (the Lazarus Group alone stole roughly $3 billion in cryptocurrency between 2017 and 2023), then recycles those dollars into imported luxury for the nomenklatura.

Free market thinkers have explained this pattern since Ludwig von Mises published his socialist calculation critique in 1920. Without genuine price signals, rational allocation collapses. Those in power then use political position to access the only real prices left: foreign market prices, paid in real money.

The North Korean dollar store is the confession. Every socialist government eventually admits, through its own behavior, that the market is indispensable. They just reserve it exclusively for themselves.
