Today Penguin Press announced my new book, Off Ramp: How to Be a Peacemaker in an Age of Contempt.
I’ve been working on this project for a few years. It’s about something I think a lot of us feel. We’re losing the ability to disagree without seeing each other as enemies. There has to be a better way, and this book is my attempt to find it.
It isn’t easy. And I don’t always get it right. But I think it’s worth trying. I know my mom will read it (and I hope you will too).

Be grateful on Pioneer Day.
Latter-day Saint pioneers created one of the most cohesive, resilient & generous societies that has ever existed.
Their faith, sacrifice & forethought continue to bear fruit that we all benefit from, regardless of church membership.
Utah has ranked No. 1 in:
Religious adherence
Church attendance
Married, two-parent households
Neighborhood friendships
Volunteerism/service
Charitable giving
Social capital
Upward mobility
Low child poverty
GDP growth
Median household income
Economic outlook
These metrics aren't an accident or an anomaly. They aren't just the result of pro-growth policy, either. It's community.
We have something special. An inheritance we can respect, preserve & build upon — or dismiss, neglect & squander.
Be grateful on Pioneer Day.
It has always struck me as strange, and harmful, that arguably the most important factor that shapes the life prospects of children, is often the most ignored.
Read the latest from @BradWilcoxIFS and me about Family Structure and why the obsession with the “usual suspects” of race, class, etc fails to provide a complete picture of why kids do or do not succeed.

Pioneer Day may be distinct to Utah, but the values exhibited by the pioneers are universally American. Today we honor those values and recommit ourselves to living them in our modern lives.
Happy Pioneer Day. We are going to build things others will enjoy for generations, just like the pioneers did—more places for our kids to live, more places to recreate, more great institutions that we can be proud of, more businesses, more prosperity. Our best work is ahead.
“Rather than defaulting to a top-down regulatory model, Utah has built the tools to be the first to restore a drying saline lake—and do it while respecting the rights of existing water users, working with local communities, and relying on voluntary, market-based approaches.”
I read it and thought that influencers have given young people an unfortunately unrealistic view of what is possible for most people. The influencers present a lifestyle that’s only possible through a combination of insane luck and constant grinding as if it’s broadly attainable.
Happy Pioneer Day, Utah! Today we honor the grit and sacrifice of those who built this state, and all who embrace the pioneer spirit through hard work, service, and industry. Happy 24th! 🇺🇸
A fun fact is that Texas would have still missed the CFP in 2025 if it was based solely on FPI/advanced metrics.
It wasn’t a Big 12 or ACC team that took their spot… it was SEC Oklahoma, who was 15th. The three worst at-larges in FPI were all SEC teams.
A boat at Bear Lake tore into her legs. Strangers say this series of coincidences helped save the ‘very strong’ woman.
I spoke with two cousins who were among the first to help the woman. Give the story a read: https://t.co/X1hvad6SLN
@JeffBiesinger Tbf, we were doing appointments before covid (but Covid gave us a chance to make it the standard) and had already brought wait times at DLD under 5 mins. But thanks for shoutout!
This idea that the SEC is so good that it needs to form its own league and crown its own champion is hilarious considering it already DOES crown a champion, who, if the SEC was so good, would surely dominate in the CFP against contenders from all those other conferences. But in reality the last 3 SEC champions have won ZERO playoff games 😭
Jusuf Nurkic shared some thoughts about the Utah Jazz:
“They’re the best organization I’ve played for in my 12-year career.”
“The young guys on the team, I was having a hard time explaining to them. This is not the NBA. This is not every team.”
“There is a certain standard teams shouldn’t be below, but they are. When you have what you have, you wanna keep it that way. I think that was the hardest thing for me to explain to the young guys. This is elite, this is not everywhere else.”
The feeling is mutual Big Nurk @bosnianbeast27!
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Texas built a lot more of something (famously housing in Austin, here electricity generation) and so now they have more of it and it’s cheaper.
“When electricity can’t move freely within states or across state lines, consumers pay for power from the nearest generator rather than the cheapest one. Reducing bottlenecks expands choice and puts downward pressure on prices.”
ERCOT is setting an all-time demand record today at 91 GW, which is +17 GW vs the summer peak in 2021. But over the same period, maximum solar output is +27 GW. Add in the massive battery buildout, and wholesale power prices are actually lower now than they were 5 years ago.
Today our football players and women’s basketball team spent the day helping the Beaver community recover from this weekend’s flooding. Filling sandbags, clearing debris, and cleaning up yards. Proud to stand alongside our neighbors when they need it most.

I have declared a state of emergency in Beaver, Piute, and Sevier counties as communities respond to devastating wildfires and the dangerous flooding that has followed.
This declaration will help the state continue providing resources to protect lives and property, support local response and recovery efforts, and prepare for additional flooding throughout the summer.
Our hearts remain with everyone affected, including those grieving the tragic loss of Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and three of their children.
Please continue to heed local warnings, avoid flooded roads and stay away from burn scar areas during storms. Flooding can become deadly in moments.
