A year since Karur. 41 lives lost. 41 families whose loved ones went there that day and never came home. None of them would have imagined when they left their houses that it would be their last day.
I still remember that night vividly. I was working out while listening to Vijay’s speech. After it ended, I started seeing reels on Instagram and called my anil here asking, “Is this actually true?” I searched the news, and one of the first reactions I came across was from Rajinikanth. Given what I had always perceived as his hostility towards Vijay, seeing him among the first voices felt strangely jarring to me almost as though the political reactions were already waiting before the enormity of what had happened had even sunk in.
And then the news kept pouring in. The numbers kept rising until it was 41.
What stayed with me just as much was what followed. I watched reactions that, to me, seemed to carry more urgency to finish TVK and Vijay politically than genuine sympathy for the people who had died. Accountability absolutely had to be demanded and questions had to be asked. But somewhere along the way, 41 deaths seemed to become political ammunition and an opportunity to bury Vijay and TVK.
Karur changed something in me too. Until then I wasn't someone who regularly voiced my thoughts on social media. It was after Karur that I started writing, speaking up and eventually joined X for Vijay. And I think Karur changed every anil and TVKian in their own way. We each carried something different from that day.
A year later, the 41 people who died should never become props in anybody’s political story for TVK, against TVK, or for anyone else. Everything that happened afterwards is there for people to look at and reach their own conclusions.
I know what I saw that night, and I haven’t forgotten it.
But today, above everything else, I remember the 41 people who never made it home and the families for whom September 27 will never again be just another date.
