Kirby Puckett played 3B, SS, and 2B in the ninth and 10th innings on this date in 1992.
It was Boston pitcher Frank Viola’s first game back at the Metrodome, and he pitched well, but the Twins walked it off against Jeff Reardon in the 10th.
In the 10th, Kent Hrbek reached on a fielder’s choice for the first out. Boston then brought in their closer Jeff Reardon. With reigning Rookie of the Year Chuck Knoblauch at-bat, Hrbie stole second and advanced to third on an error on the play, then scored the walk-off run on an infield-single by Knoblauch.
Tom Kelly was pulling a lot of strings late in this game, but I think what Kirby playing infield boils down to is Hrbek pinch-hitting for the shortstop Greg Gagne in the bottom of the eighth. TK brought Kirby into the infield, and I’m guessing moved him around each at-bat to where he was least likely to be hit to. (And he wasn’t.) The Twins used 14 position players in the game.
"When the Astros snatched Don Sutton up in 1980, with a four-year, $3.1 million offer, it was impossible for Tommy Lasorda not to take it personally.
Don Sutton had been a Walter Alston man, publicly lobbying for coach Jeff Torborg to replace the storied manager in 1976, even when Lasorda was all but a lock for the position.
"I just don’t believe that I could play for a manager who’s a headline grabber, who isn’t honest." Sutton said at the time, later refusing to become “one of Lasorda’s bobos.”
Things grew so heated that Lasorda challenged Sutton to settle their differences with fists.
The pitcher declined.
Their differences remained."
Don Sutton never garnered a single Cy Young vote in four years under Lasorda during his prime.
"Comparing me to Sandy Koufax is like comparing Earl Scheib to Michelangelo."
Don Sutton.
In 1998, when the Dodgers retired Don Sutton’s number, Sandy Koufax paid his own way to attend the retirement Ceremonies, as they were teammates on the 1966 Dodgers, Sutton’s rookie year.
When Don Sutton thanked him, Koufax said:
"How could I not?
You’re the only 300-game winner I ever played with."
Don Sutton is in my HOF!!!
The odds of someone hitting two grand slams in the same inning is basically 1 in 75869795847. In ‘99 Fernando Tatis Sr. did it. He’s the only one in baseball history to ever accomplish this feat
Today in 1978 in Baltimore: the Rangers' George "Doc" Medich, a medical student at the University of Pittsburgh while playing baseball, rushed into the stands to save the life of a fan having a heart attack.
Two years earlier, Medich had also run into the stands to try to save a fan in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, that fan passed away.

The postseason saves record belongs to Mariano Rivera with 42, nearly double anyone else. Kenley Jansen is a distant second. Rivera was the greatest October reliever ever, closing out games in the biggest moments for the Yankees dynasty year after year.
HBP was synonymous with Ron Hunt.
He was hit by a pitch 243 times during his big-league career, including 50 knocks in 1971 when he was with the #expos.
Choked up on the bat, he was tough to strike out. He fanned only 382 times in 6,158 plate appearances.
He's gone at 85.
R.I.P.
This is Tom DeLonge, the lead singer of Blink-182, and the dude who wrote the song the entire stadium is singing. No one around him seems to notice he is there (except the camera person)
That’s gotta be one of the greatest feelings to see this stadium full of people chanting your bands song.
Kansas City Royal
Hal McRae was one of early players who became specialized in the Designated Hitter role. In that role he was a 3x All Star.
Can you name another Royal?
