@anish_koka@zagrebbi Another thought that occurred is that in TX and CA I bet Asians are less likely to apply for early decision since the state schools (UT-Austin and UCLA, UCB, UCSD) are excellent and of course, much cheaper. Acceptance rates at Columbia early decision are higher.
@anish_koka@zagrebbi Some of this could be explained by (1) geographic concentration, tech industry skews CA and TX for Indian - super competitive areas; (2) NY/New England private schools have advantage where demographically a lot of East asians reside.
@Kazanjy@YIMBYLAND No, from my understanding CA cutoff was 220 and TX cutoff was 219. Austin public schools are impressive but I think Stuyvesant in NYC regularly pumps out 150+ / year.
$MRK $MRNA news filtered through all the societal lenses in my X timeline:
The MAGA MAHA crowd say mRNA jab doesn’t treat cancer, it gives you cancer.
The Silicon Valley longevity bros say AI just cured cancer.
The priestly science nerds say press releases with no data are evil.
The Wall St. hedge fund bros say Moderna’s stock price is a war crime.
@pdhsu Good luck on fast and cheap clinical trials. That 20% of GDP spent on healthcare is largely hospitals, physicians, and nurses. Biopharma takes input pricing for clinical trials as given. Paucity of late-stage clinical data is a huge problem for AI.
@jayabacus A long time ago, remember those dendrillionaires ($DNDN)? And don't forget the Northfield Labs yahoo finance chat board. Legendary. People getting quite personal.
@eddyluxe_@financialsamura The math excludes extracurricular activities, since SAT and GPA do not differentiate anymore. Also, a good public school district is arbitraged away by high prop values plus intense competition (look up Princeton HS eg). Home schooling is an alternative but has its issues.
@zagrebbi The test was harder until 1995. 1470 in 1992 translates into 1570 today. This and grade inflation make it all about fancy extracurriculars which money can buy. Not to mention Asian demographics while T20 seats remain scarce.
@texasrunnerDFW@financedystop My prediction: Texas schools will get the best & brightest undergrads as still meritocracy. Out-of-state still cheaper than private schools, only elites (T20) are worth it due to cost. UCs too slow to reinstate SAT. Child born today -> $1 MM to attend Stanford 18 yrs from now.
@sfstandard If the bureaucracy continues to proceed at a snail's pace, the UC brand will erode. Ivies & others could render UC's as 2nd tier in STEM. If the best & brightest in CA go outside CA for undergrad, there's also a risk that a brain drain could undermine CA long-term.
@wa154lco Lilly can overpay a little bit. The company needs a second pillar alongside cardiometabolic. Neurodegen may just take a while. They can dominate the I&I channel, plus GLP-1s have shown activity in I&I.
