The free world erupts in joy at the news that the Allies have landed in Normandy. In Amsterdam, Anne Frank notes in her diary that the best thing about the invasion is the feeling that "friends are on their way." Millions of Europeans dare to hope for freedom, at long last.
Bomber pilots set their watches. They have already suffered enormous losses in the run-up to D-Day. Now they are being told to finish the job, give the boys in the boats a chance.

Hommage et admiration sans bornes pour ces jeunes soldats venus libérer notre pays.
The uncle I never met. Killed the day after D-Day. He lies forever in France. I put down a photo of his sister (mum) and our family & a floral tribute. Although all I knew of him was the stories my mum told. Finding his grave was very emotional, RIP Uncle Trevor
On this 82nd anniversary of D-Day, we remember the young men who stepped into hell so that future generations could live in freedom.
Many were barely out of school. Many never came home.
Soon, the last of the D-Day generation will be gone.
When they leave us, we lose more than veterans. We lose living witnesses to courage, sacrifice and the price of freedom.
Their duty was to remember us.
Our duty is to remember them.
Lest we forget. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇨🇦🙏❤️
Ravensbrück, Germany, 1945
When Ravensbrück was liberated, a nurse noticed a woman who kept covering her face with a torn white scarf. The nurse gently lifted it away, revealing scars that ran from her mouth to her ear — punishment for speaking to a guard in defiance. The woman said softly, “I told him that we are not animals.”
The nurse tied the scarf back, this time like a medal instead of a mask. When the woman walked through the gates, she no longer hid her face. Every step she took was a silent act of defiance against those who tried to erase her.
Her scarf is still preserved — not as a relic of pain, but of the courage to speak when silence was safer.
