A New Jersey nobody did what Tehran’s ayatollahs spent 33 years begging for. A federal jury just called it what it actually is: state-sponsored terrorism by proxy.

Iran’s Fatwa Finally Drew Blood in America. The Jury Didn’t Flinch.

Here’s what the glossy headlines won’t tell you.

Hadi Matar, 28, of Fairview, New Jersey — a man with no history of violence, no criminal record, no prior connection to any terrorist organization — spent over a year methodically researching a 1989 religious death warrant issued by a foreign theocrat. He discussed it with contacts in Iran, Australia, and Canada. He created propaganda videos stitching together Khomeini’s fatwa with Nasrallah’s 2006 endorsement. He traveled under a false name. He tracked Rushdie’s public schedule, identified the Chautauqua Institution as the softest target, and on August 12, 2022, he climbed onto a stage and stabbed a 75-year-old man fifteen times.

Read that again: fifteen times.

The federal jury in Buffalo deliberated for just a couple of hours before convicting him on all counts — engaging in an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries, providing material support to Hezbollah, and providing material support to terrorists. He already has 25 years from the state. He’s looking at life come November 3.

The Part They’re Sanitizing

The media framing is predictable. Lone wolf. Radicalized online. Mentally ill. The usual basket of deflections designed to avoid naming the elephant in the room:

This was a hit ordered by a sovereign state.

Ayatollah Khomeini issued the fatwa in 1989. Iran’s government made a big show of “distancing” itself in 1998 so Britain would restore diplomatic relations — a classic Tehran rope-a-dope. Then Supreme Leader Khamenei reaffirmed the fatwa in 2017. Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s Secretary-General, endorsed it in 2006. The bounty was never rescinded. The machinery never stopped humming.

And here’s what makes this conviction genuinely significant: the federal government just proved in open court that an American citizen was directly motivated by and communicating about the fatwa with contacts spanning multiple continents — including Iran itself. That’s not radicalization. That’s operational coordination.

The Chautauqua Security Charade

Worth noting: Chautauqua Institution had a “law enforcement presence” at the event. No bag checks. No metal detectors. No real security at a gated community hosting the most hunted author on the planet.

A man with a backpack and a knife walked right up to the stage.

The first stab went straight into Rushdie’s neck artery. He lost an eye. He nearly bled out on stage while a doctor from the audience performed emergency aid. A firefighter saved his life.

The institution’s president, Michael Hill, said afterward: “This has never happened in our entire history. Chautauqua has always been an extremely safe place.”

That’s not a statement of fact. That’s an epitaph for institutional negligence.

Why This Conviction Matters

This isn’t just about one attempted murder. It’s about closing the gap between what we *know* and what we’re willing to adjudicate.

For decades, Iran has operated a two-track system: officially deny involvement while religious and paramilitary organs keep the fatwa alive through back channels, bounties, and ideological grooming. The West plays along because diplomacy requires pretending the 1998 “dissociation” meant something.

This verdict shreds that pretense. A U.S. federal court has now legally established that:

- The fatwa is an active, ongoing terrorist directive, not a historical relic

- Hezbollah’s endorsement constitutes material support for terrorism

- Iran’s ideological apparatus directly contributed to an attempted assassination on American soil

The DOJ’s Assistant Attorney General for National Security called it “a chilling reminder of the global reach of Iranian terrorism.” For once, the institutional language isn’t hyperbole.

The Uncomfortable Question Nobody’s Asking

If a foreign government issues a death warrant against a private citizen — a writer, no less — and that death warrant sits active for 33 years, accumulating endorsements from designated terrorist organizations, and then a man shows up to execute it...

At what point is the Iranian state itself the defendant?

Matar is a useful idiot who did what the regime wanted. He’ll rot in prison. But the men who wrote the order, reaffirmed it, and kept the bounty alive? They’re still in Tehran, still attending UN functions, still receiving diplomatic courtesies from the very nations whose citizens they’ve marked for death.

The jury did its job. The question is whether anyone in Washington has the stomach to do theirs.

The Final Word

Salman Rushdie survived. Barely. He’s blind in one eye, scarred permanently, but he lived to testify at the trial — and he credited a firefighter with saving his life.
