“The more you understand this world, the more you destroy yourself. That's why fools are happy, and intelligent people live in loneliness.”
- Fyodor Dostoevsky
Fyodor Dostoevsky, born November 11, 1821, in Moscow and died February 9, 1881, in St. Petersburg, was a renowned Russian novelist and short-story writer. His remarkable ability to explore the deepest and darkest aspects of the human mind, while also revealing moments of profound insight, made his writing enormously influential on 20th-century literature.
Widely considered one of the greatest novelists in history, Dostoevsky had a lasting impact far beyond literature. His ideas helped shape modernism, existentialism, psychology, theology, and literary criticism. His works are sometimes described as prophetic because of how closely his portrayals of revolutionary thought anticipated later political developments in Russia. During his lifetime, Dostoevsky was also well known for his work as a journalist.

"I drink much less than most people think, and I think much more than most people would believe. I am quite sincere about some of the things that people take very lightly, and almost insultingly unconcerned about some of the things which most people take seriously. In short, I am basically antisocial: certainly not to an alarming degree, but just more so than I appear to be."
When Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, 1,800 papyrus scrolls in one villa’s library were carbonized. One five-foot-long scroll has now been virtually “unwrapped” using CT scanning and AI that identifies ink. Archaeologists have begun deciphering what it says!
