Bitcoin, and Bitcoin alone, is sovereign.
Not because it's worth more.
Not because number go up.
Because no one controls it.
No one can print more of it.
No one can stop it.
No one can change the rules for their benefit.
For the first time in history, humanity has a form of money that answers to nobody.
That's why Bitcoin matters.
I get that point, and from a Bitcoiner’s perspective I agree that widespread self custody matters if Bitcoin is going to remain what it was designed to be.
But I think that answers a slightly different question.
The average investor isn’t asking, “How do I help Bitcoin avoid becoming Gold 2.0?”
He’s asking:
“What tangible benefit do I get from holding the actual BTC instead of getting the same price exposure through an ETF?”
If his only objective is capital appreciation, convenience and simplicity, “Bitcoin needs you to self custody” probably isn’t going to convince him.
The stronger case has to explain why ownership itself is valuable to him:
No counterparty.
No permission required.
No intermediary between you and your asset.
Portable globally.
Available 24/7.
And an asset you can actually use, move and verify yourself.
That, IMO, is the argument we need to make to the average investor.
Not just why self-custody is good for Bitcoin, but why self custody is good for them.
A dear friend asked me this yesterday, and I thought I’d throw it to some of the serious Bitcoiners on here:
“Bruzzy — sell me on why physically holding your BTC is such a big deal?
Why go through the effort, responsibility and complexity of self-custody when you could simply have the same capital exposure through a managed Bitcoin ETF?”
Fair question.
So, Bitcoiners — if you had ONE shot at convincing someone why owning the actual Bitcoin matters more than simply owning exposure to its price…
What would you tell them?
Self-custody vs ETF.
Make the case. 👇leaving the floor for the veterans here @JoelHodlman@HodlFlorida@ForrestHODL@JoshuaDHCM@seanclarke911@FinCreighton@AAStack@BeefButterBTC@BTC_JEDI21
@BITCOIN_SAT0SHI@FinCreighton I agree 💯. But I still don’t think my friend’s original question has actually been answered. Why is the additional time, effort and responsibility of physically self-custodying BTC worth it for him versus simply holding exposure through a professionally managed ETF?
I get the principle, Fin — and I’m obviously a believer in self-custody.
But I still don’t think my friend’s original question has actually been answered. Why is the additional time, effort and responsibility of physically self-custodying BTC worth it for him versus simply holding exposure through a professionally managed ETF?
“Not your keys, not your coins” explains what self-custody is.
Sovereignty explains why Bitcoiners value it. But neither necessarily answers the practical cost-benefit question he’s asking.
What tangible advantage does self-custody give the average long-term holder that is significant enough to justify taking on key management, backups, inheritance planning, operational security and the risk of human error?
That’s the argument I’m trying to articulate to him.
Father’s Day hits different when you look at where the story started.
From two people celebrating the possibility of a little girl…
to me holding her hand and realising she has completely changed what “success” means.
The gym builds strength.
Bitcoin builds freedom.
Work builds a future.
But fatherhood gives all of it a purpose.
One day that tiny hand won’t need mine to cross the road. Until then, I’m going to be present for every walk, every laugh, every lesson and every ordinary moment I’ll eventually wish I could have back.
My greatest responsibility.
My greatest blessing.
My greatest proof of work.
Happy Father’s Day to every dad building himself into the man his children deserve. ❤️
Stack sats. Build strength. Raise them right.
