BREAKING NEWS: BELGIUM GOVERNMENT PLANS TO TAKE OVER NUCLEAR REACTORS
Energy company Engie and the Belgian government have entered into negotiations regarding the acquisition of all seven of Belgium's nuclear assets.
Until an agreement is reached, all dismantling work has been halted, keeping "all options open for the Belgian State."
An agreement is expected by October 1st.

WE HAVE ACHIEVED CRITICALITY ✨
On the fourth of June 2026, the Idaho sun rose over the high desert kindling the dawn of the Second Atomic Age.
Last May, President Trump signed an executive order mandating that three reactors go critical before July 4th, 2026.
One month ahead of schedule, @AntaresNuclear answered, sustaining a steady chain reaction at Idaho National Laboratory.
This is the first new reactor brought to life at INL since 1973. The same ground where, in 1951, nuclear electricity first powered four light bulbs.
Criticality is only the beginning, a fleeting spark on a long and difficult road.
But it carries a message that echoes across the plains: American Nuclear is back.
Today marks the return of a new era, one where the United States once again tackles the hard things, where innovation is pursued without apology and celebrated without restraint.
It was powerful to stand on that iconic ground and witness history be made!
Congratulations to every single one involved ✨
Constellation will use ~$30 million in federal and state government grants to prepare an NRC Early Site P ermit (ESP) to build a nuclear plant in Oswego County in New York. Article link in reply.
The ESP will approve a site for nuclear power generation. It does not specify a reactor design. That will come later in the overall licensing process.
Thus, Constellation does not have to chose a reactor design before applying for an ESP. It will speed up the overall licensing process by allowing site evaluations to proceed before selecting a reactor design.
Scoop: Amazon-backed reactor startup X-energy just won NRC approval of the environmental review for its debut plant in Texas.
It's historic, from an environmental permitting perspective. This is the first time the agency has given a project the green light after a months-long environmental assessment rather than years-long environmental impact statement.
I'll put a link to my @CanaryMediaInc story in the comments.

I had an elderly patient in the ER the other day: lost his house, living out of his car, drinking more than he should.., in rough shape.
I asked him what he used to do for a living.
"Draftsman at Ontario Hydro."
I probed further. Turns out his career included drawing up blueprints for every one of Ontario's nuclear power plants.
I told him I was interested in nuclear power, which he interpreted as me being an anti. "Yeah, a lot of people don't like it"
I clarified my position and thanked him for being a part of the great generation that helped to build the infrastructure that underpins our wealth and prosperity to this day.
He looked surprised. His eyes lit up with pride and a sense of dignity which shone through his dishevelled appearance lying sick in an emergency room hospital bed.
As my generation struggles to build megaprojects: light rail, subways and yes nuclear power plants, we owe a debt of gratitude to our parents and grandparents who so competently worked their fingers to the bone to provide us with the infrastructure that underlies our material comforts.
The overhead lights in that hospital hallway, reflected in that man's eyes as we chatted about more than just his broken body, were the fruits of his labour.
As a society we finally seem to have reached a political consensus that we should not be tearing down the industrial cathedrals that have been built for us by this great generation: edifices like our nuclear power plants at Pickering, Darlington and Bruce.
The champions of that kind of vandalism have been decisively defeated. Im glad to have played my role in that battle. Now it is time for a reorientation towards gratitude and appreciation. It is time for us to take inspiration and pick up our tools to get building for our children and grandchildren so that they too may prosper.
It was an honour to care for this man, this builder, this patient and bring a sense of pride and a smile back to his face.
Thanks to David Lawless and Denis Duff for Ireland's first Pro-Nuclear Public Meeting took place on May 5th! 🎉
They had a brilliant open discussion on nuclear energy as a path to a decarbonised grid.
Big thanks to everyone who came.
The next one can't come soon enough! ☢️
The fraction of TVA's power from nuclear increased from 31% in the first half of fiscal 2025 to 41% in the first half of fiscal 2026. The 10% increase in nuclear's share replaced natural gas (-4%), hydro (-2%) and purchased power (-4%). Article link in reply.
TVA's nuclear generation increased from 33,772 GWh to 25,901 GWh over the two time periods.
On the negative side, the Trump admin forced TVA to abandon plans to replace some of its coal generation with cleaner gas generation. Coal's percentage remained the same over the above time periods.
Australia's biggest state just passed a bill in the Upper House to lift its uranium mining and nuclear power prohibition.
This is a major first step for our nuclear bans to be lifted.

Colorado's House Energy and Environment Committee passed HB 26-1337 with a narrow, 7-6 vote. The bill would allow Xcel (CO's largest utility) to spend up to $20 million on a nuclear feasibility study. Article link in reply.
HB-1337 would also establish a state goal of identifying at least one site for a nuclear energy project by 2035, and beginning construction by 2040.
It's somewhat frustrating that a mere study bill had so much opposition. (Even California state committees recently passed a study bill with strong majorities.)
Anti-nuclear groups presented the common, and silly, argument that they shouldn't develop SMRs because.... they havent been developed yet. 🤪
One silver lining is that (according to the article) the anti-nuclear groups mainly presented economic (vs. environmental) arguments. The environmental argument against nuclear is essentially dead. There is strong scientific consensus that nuclear is a clean sources, like solar an wind. Colorado itself classifies nuclear as a clean source.
HB 26-1337 now moves on to the House Appropriations Committee. A companion senate bill needs to be introduced.
Big moment — @JamesOConnorTD has introduced a bill to reverse Ireland's ban on nuclear energy.
The path to nuclear energy has been set out in the IAEA milestone approach. We just need to take the first step.
Let's make Ireland's energy supply cheaper, cleaner and more secure 🇮🇪
