We keep hearing about these “heat domes.”

“Heat dome” is a sensationalized term now used to describe a mid-tropospheric ridge (i.e., an elongated warm-core high-pressure area) that compresses a warm, humid air mass and detaches from the jet stream, which causes the air mass to stagnate over a region for several days.

But the media (and many meteorologists) use “heat dome” because it sounds scary and gets their attention.

This isn’t a new phenomenon. It happens every year somewhere.
