What is the first step you would take if you experienced gender-based violence?

Are you even aware that Nigeria has a law that prohibits various forms of violence?

According to the 2024 Womanity Index, 3 out of every 5 Nigerians have either experienced gender-based violence or know someone who has.

Yet, 50.7% of Nigerians are unaware of one of the most important laws protecting them - the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) Act. Ten years after its passage, data show that of the 49.3% who are aware, only 29% know its content “very well.”

If we truly want to combat GBV, we must start by improving awareness about the systems and structures that protect people. Data shows us where the gaps are and where action is needed.

The full VAPP Act Implementation Survey Report 2025 is out!

Public awareness is just one of the four themes assessed in this report. The others are Enforcement Systems, Support Services, and Coordination Mechanisms.

These insights, along with detailed national and state-level data, are all in Invictus Africa’s VAPP Act Implementation Survey Report 2025, which covers 35 of Nigeria’s 36 states (except Kano) and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This data shows an encouraging trend in modern contraceptive use, with a steady increase as women gain more access to education.

The percentage of women using modern contraceptive methods rises from 6.3% (no education) to 28% (more than secondary education), a sharp and meaningful difference.

This pattern underscores how education can empower women with knowledge, confidence, and the ability to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

Better education improves a woman's access, and it remains one of the most powerful pathways to strengthening reproductive health choices and advancing women’s health across communities.

How did we get here? How can armed groups openly terrorize citizens, document their crimes, yet face zero consequences? This is a complete collapse of state responsibility, and silence in the face of terror is permission for it to continue.
