I'll tell you what I saw and see.

I saw a person who wanted power so badly, he was willing to break the caucus rule he helped create. I saw a person agree to the caucus rules that morning and when the vote wasn't going his way after two rounds of voting, he got up with 28 other Republican members and walked out to coordinate with the Democrats.

I saw a guy who knew the camp safety bill was bad legislation and allowed it to pass while knowing it was going to be destructive to so many good people who own and run camps and to the kids who attend them. He was willing to sacrifice their livelihoods so he could keep a seat at the table. Out of 360ish youth camps, 107 chose not to renew their youth camp licenses because of the camp bill and the youth camp license fee increased to as much as $20,000 dollars per year.

I saw a man who was willing to let the House Investigation Committee be weaponized to destroy a good family and camp because of politics and self preservation.

If someone is willing to sacrifice good people to save themselves, what does that say about their character? Is a simple apology enough to forgive them and have them lead the Texas House? Would my district approve of me voting for someone that did those things?

So what do I see now? I see a lot of folks sucking up to him because he is the Speaker and they want a seat at the table. I see people acting in fear and self interest. I see people believing the conversations inside their bubble. I see people willing to deny their own values to have a seat at the table.

I see a man who has sat by quietly while government has and is doing some egregious things to its own people. I see a man who is now trying to make nice with people from which he needs their vote to stay in power. I see a man who has made zero attempt to apologize or reconcile with the citizens he threw under the bus to save himself.

I see a man who is an opportunist for his own gain and isn't remorseful for the people he claimed to stand up for and didn't.

After this job is over, I have to live with myself as do my colleagues. Is it our duty to sacrifice good people or to stand up for them? Is it our duty to turn a blind eye and morally disengage from our actions so we can have a seat at the table? Or...are we called to be better than serving our self and to stand up for others?

I guess it will be easier to just claim that I am an ineffective rep and bow a knee to those in leadership. It is easier to morally disengage from reality of our actions so that we are at peace with ourselves.

So what will I see next? Probably attempts to punish me, put me in the corner, embarrass me, give my bills away, weaponize government against me, etc. The cost of standing up is much higher than the cost of turning a blind eye.
