Scientists have uncovered that the brain uses different neural routes to control cravings for sugary versus fatty foods.
In mice, carbohydrate intake was driven by AMPK-regulated CRH neurons, while fat intake depended on MC4R-expressing neurons in the hypothalamus.
These distinct circuits were activated by NPY neurons in the brainstem during energy shortages.
The findings provide a clearer understanding of how the brain manages nutrient-specific hunger to maintain balance during metabolic stress.
