Earth is a really old colony of the Anunnaki. Some of their peoples have been here for many hundreds of millions of years. These lived/lives in the Abzu = underworld (hollow parts of the Earth).

The human story truly begins(a few hundred thousand years ago) when the Anunnaki suffers a civil war on cosmic scale back in the Pleiades. Some manage to flee(a few thousands a most) in ships through a worm hole leading to the Sol start system, and they crash land on Earth. First Enki and his entourage arrives, then at a later time Enlil and Anu.

They need workers to build infrastructure and dig water canals for their food plantations/garden. This food plantation was the actual Garden of Eden.

Christianity turned this into a highly symbolic story, when the truth was much more simple.

Food was scare and humans "tresspassed" and picked some fruits of the trees. Enlil, his title being "Great Satam" (= Territorial Administrator, ruler of Earth) and a hater of humanity, wasn't happy about this and wanted to hunt the humans down. You can understand that he became Satan in Genesis.

Enki, looking a bit like a frogman or lizardman warned the humans about not picking the fruit of trees. You can easily see why he became the Serpent in Genesis.

Anyway, A few hundred Anunna(Nungal/igigi/watchers) workers of their own didn't cut it, so Enki began the human cloning experiments...
