What is with students today? Multiple students took zeros on assignments even after being offered extensions. One forgot to do the final. And finding grad students to guest lecture was like pulling teeth. #AcademicTwitter
When I was a grad student, I jumped at the chance to give a guest lecture in a class. Even my most recent PhD advise and his cohort were the same way. What changed?
Finally have a preprint to share, collaborative work with @scottmwilliams9. Host-pathogen interaction effects with the Ugandan #tuberculosis lineage. Effects on immune response, some seen across different global lineages. https://t.co/J4Wr1Cjxm1
Was explaining NIH grant review to a (non-academic) friend and he was blown away that using AI for review is expressly forbidden. Why not try it? Do reviews with humans and AI side by side and see if they are consistent?
Dear @NIH , if you are going to have a font rule, enforce it consistently. I am tired of reviewing grants with size 7-8 font when my colleagues get proposals kicked back with size 10.98 font.
Today we withdrew a paper because it sat at the journal for 7 months, and supposedly the reviews had been sitting with the handling editor for at least a month with no decision. Request to transfer to a different editor denied. Ridiculous. #AcademicTwitter
Food for thought: has the inception of all these new journals led to significantly longer review times? Is the editorial/ review pool overtaxed? #AcademicTwitter
MPH Innovations Conference @CWRUSOM. My very first student to do a self-designed undergrad major in public health, Katherine Papahadjopoulos, presented her MPH capstone! All the students did great!
PSA: #NIH study section on Microsoft Teams is definitely inferior. Poor sound quality, video freezing and fuzzy, and breakout groups not working. Please go back to zoom.
I just opened my advising portal and discovered I have 100 advisees. That does not include any new minor students I get this week, 2 more Dean's major students, and my co-mentored PhD student. WOW.
This is your regular reminder to accept journal review requests every now and then and complete them on time. Holding papers hostage is not fair to your worldwide colleagues. #AcademicTwitter
Always new challenges / adventures in teaching. Currently getting a rash of students asking for me to change the days of the class, teach asychronously (not allowed by university), and or let them skip half the sessions. My class time has been set for 8 years... #AcademicTwitter
A plea to fellow academics: please be timely in your manuscript reviews. If you can’t do it in the allotted or reasonable time, decline. Papers being under review for MONTHS hurts science… not to mention it is inconsiderate and rude. #AcademicTwitter
Some academics have a laissez faire attitude towards deadlines. That’s not cute when someone else is ultimately responsible.. and life happens to that person responsible. Be considerate. If you can’t make a deadline, say so.
