What began as the largest rhino translocation ever undertaken has become a remarkable conservation success. One year on, the 70 southern white rhinos are thriving in their new home in Akagera National Park, new calves have been born, and not a single rhino has been lost to poaching. Their successful adaptation reinforces Akagera’s role as a secure breeding stronghold and an important contributor to the future of rhino conservation in Africa.

This milestone reflects the power of collaboration and the vision of the Rhino Rewild Initiative, an ambitious effort to secure the future of rhinos by establishing thriving populations in well-managed protected areas across Africa.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the @RDBrwanda, @AfricanParks, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, our dedicated field teams, conservation experts, and the many stakeholders whose support made this historic achievement possible.

Together, we are demonstrating that when vision, partnership, and protection come together, conservation at scale can deliver lasting results for wildlife and future generations.

The Mishaya Gorilla Family in Rushaga has welcomed a newborn baby, bringing the family’s number to 10 members.

Born to Bashekura, this newest addition is a wonderful milestone for the family and a reminder of the importance of protecting these endangered giants and the habitats they call home.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority is undertaking efforts to decentralize conservation efforts in Uganda with the launch of the first Regional Satellite Zoo in Eastern Uganda.

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre - Mbale is set to be officially launched on Friday 12 June.

The Mishaya Gorilla Family in Rushaga has welcomed a newborn baby, increasing the group's membership from 9 to 10 individuals.

The baby's mother is Bashekura (Adult Female), adding another exciting chapter to the family's story and a positive milestone for mountain gorilla conservation.

The elephant collaring operation across Kidepo and the wider Karamoja–Turkana landscape has been successfully concluded, with 16 elephants now fitted with GPS satellite collars. Their movements are already being tracked in real time on EarthRanger @EarthRangerTech, the protected area management system used by Uganda Wildlife Authority @ugwildlife (UWA).

With data now flowing in, wildlife authorities on both sides of the border can begin to anticipate movements, respond to threats, and plan more effectively for peaceful co-existence between people and elephants across this transboundary landscape.

This was no ordinary deployment. It required meticulous planning, tight coordination and long, intense days. We extend our thanks and congratulations to everyone who made this possible: the UCF Veterinary & field teams, UWA Veterinary, management and operations teams, our partners at Northern Rangelands Trust @NRT_Kenya, Save the Elephants @ste_kenya, Wild Landscapes International @wild_landscapes, Kenya Wildlife Service @KWSKenya, Kenya Wildlife Research & Training Institute, and Tropic Air @TropicAirKenya and the Mara Elephant Project @MaraElephant for their vital aerial support. This activity was partly funded by the European Union @EUinUG NaturAfrica programme.

This collaring is not just about elephants, it’s about restoring and protecting the delicate balance between nature, people and progress. This achievement belongs to the people of the Kidepo region who have long shared their home with elephants and continue striving for peaceful co-existence, even as shifting land use patterns and emerging pressures have increased the risk of conflict in recent years.

With collaring teams now safely back at their posts across Kampala and Kenya, the focus shifts to monitoring, analysis, and action. UCF’s Conservation Technology team remains in Kidepo to support UWA’s team as they deepen the integration of EarthRanger into all aspects of operations across the park.
