Why is the PM talking about free movement of workers? I suspect that the latest potential output forecasts from the OBR will have had a role. The most recent population forecasts from the ONS now see 1m fewer people aged 16+ in the UK by the end of the decade than expected back in March. Quite the hit to potential output growth for any given participation rate. For all the enthusiasm about recent productivity methods for the UK, this is a fresh headwind to potential output.

@entrustTMF Yeah, but the likes of Mittal hold their wealth offshore (even his residence is owned through a BVI offshore co.) and most of their income is never taxed in the UK. Pretty much they just pay a £60k flat fee and minor local taxes.

The specific case of Sally Rooney isn't an act of censorship.

I am a free speech absolutist. If she wanted to write book called "Why I support Al Qaeda, ISIS, and the IRA" then I'd support her right to do so. Britain should have a First Amendment approach to speech.

However, if she wants to give the proceeds of that book to those organisations, then it is right for her publisher to prevent her (and it would probably be criminally liable too.)

The open letter is cowardly. They should have the courage to state clearly their view: it should be legal to directly fund organisations that unapologetically break into military base.

BTW, I note that none of the signatories of this letter signed the Harper's letter in favour of free speech. Some however attacked it.

This is a very silly story.

There is no "plot" and no "raid". Just a hysterical misunderstanding of a technical consultation.

There *is* a real issue - but it's likely unintended and I expect it will fixed in the legislation.
