@juliannacarey7 @DrPorcher I agree! Teachers need to be aware of how they can help students and advocate for their Black students. Students shouldn't feel scared to be bullied in school just because of what they look like. #teacheredumatters#ELE301#TCNJEduLions
@eepainton @DrPorcher I agree, we have freedom of speech in this country and we need to use in the right ways. Especially people who aren't Black because they can use their privilege to gain rights for others. #teacheredumatters#ELE301#TCNJEduLions
@DrPorcher Being a future teacher, I plan to make it a safe place for all students no matter race, gender, language spoken, etc. A school is a place for learning and feeling comforted so I will do everything to keep all of the students comfortable. #teacheredumatters#ELE301#TCNJEduLions
@eepainton @DrPorcher I agree I did not know the origin of any of the words that we learned about today. I think society needs to be more mindful about what they say and find where the origin of words come from before just saying them. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher Doing the padlet about our own experiences gets us to think about how different grammars were taught. Also reading the book (mine being spanglish) but hearing the presentation today, allowed for deeper thinking of how we need to change the system. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher @dr_s_bertrand Hi! My name is Stephanie and I go to the University of Delaware. My major is elementary ed with a concentration in special ed! #teacheredumatters
I would remove the word English and just keep the sentence read "It varies among each language" I think having the word there shows that English is the set language. I think grammar is just a set of guidelines that each language must follow to communicate. #teacheredumatters
@ElanaAbramss @DrPorcher I completely agree with this people should feel comfortable talking in their "mother tongue" because that is how they grew up and are most genuine. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher I think a linguistically free world would be amazing for those who do not speak mainstream English. It allows everyone to feel comfortable while speaking and lets them talk however they grew up talking. They do not have to hide who they are to fit in. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher I ensure my comments do not cause harm to others by making sure not to use certain words that have a negative connotation. Also getting my point across with just facts. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher My βmotherβs tongueβ can be seen as having an accent. She has always lived in NY and whenever she travels places people point out that she sounds different than them. She speaks formally when talking to her boss but will use more informal words in the house. #teacheredumatters
@ddowning24 @DrPorcher Our answers are similar because both of our mothers have Long island accents. My mother also mostly speaks mainstream English. #teacheredumatters
My understanding of formal vs informal language has been challenged specifically when you brought up the fact that I do not have many African American people in my close life however I still made the judgement that the person was Black. #teacheredumatters
Formal language is language we should use when talking in an interview, while informal language is language you can use while hanging out with your friends. I think the person gets to decide what is formal versus not formal.
