If medical students and trainees are taught to recognize symptoms of disease in only white patients and learn to perform lifesaving maneuvers on only male-bodied mannequins, medical educators may be unwittingly contributing to health disparities.
Racism is a social determinant of health and creates toxic stress in children, teens and families that impacts their health. Children will not be able to reach their full potential until we prevent and counteract these experiences for all children--in medicine and everyday life.
