PhD candidate at Durham University, Primatology, bonobos, development of empathy, social functioning, primate rehabilitation, conservation, welfare 🇦🇹 🇬🇧 🌍
I’m thrilled to ANNOUNCE our NEW PAPER on factors shaping the development of socio-emotional functioning across the lives of bonobos at @Lola_ya_Bonobo sanctuary! I’m grateful to my fantastic co-authors @zannaclay, @cwebb218, @jakebrooker and @FransdeWaal. https://t.co/scjYto7D71
THE ARROGANT APE IS OUT TODAY!
The idea for this book began in 2019 in a seminar course I taught at Harvard. With each class discussion, it felt like my students and I were imagining and crafting a world beyond human exceptionalism. It was the world we wanted to live in. (1/3)
THE ARROGANT APE, a book about human exceptionalism and the transformative power of unlearning it, is available for preorder now and will be on sale September 2, 2025. https://t.co/GYWz2T32rr
Interested in biology and comparative psychology, and working in an interdisciplinary project and research team? I’m advertising two PhD positions on the evolutionary origins of cooperative sociality and communication (start 1.10.) @UniKonstanz@CBehav 👇 links below!
@BBCNews coverage of our new study comparing empathic tendencies in bonobos and chimpanzees. I had the great pleasure to conduct the bonobo side of observations and data collection in this study! @Lola_ya_Bonobo, @Chimfunshi, @durham_uni, @TempletonWorld

Bonobos live only in the heart of the Congo rainforest. Their home is vital to our climate, storing more carbon per acre than the Amazon. 🌳🌍
But it’s disappearing fast.

Valentine’s Day? Even better: Happy #WorldBonoboDay! Let’s spread some love to our closest living cousins (besides chimps) and support crucial conservation efforts! These two friends are given a second chance at the world’s only bonobo sanctuary in D.R. Congo @Lola_ya_Bonobo.
@Lola_ya_Bonobo rescues orphaned bonobos, victims to the illegal bushmeat and pet trade, rehabilitates and eventually reintroduces them into the wild, where they belong. Our recent study shows that they are on a good way 🥳 👉 https://t.co/scjYto75ht 👉 https://t.co/JxrDVRgjXS
@meganpetersdorf Hi Megan, if of interest, I'd be happy to talk about my PhD work and recent paper on socio-emotional development in sanctuary living bonobos.
New research led by @DurhamPsych shows orphaned apes at the world’s only bonobo sanctuary @Lola_ya_Bonobo can overcome trauma to develop social abilities like those of mother-reared bonobos 👉 https://t.co/0rQb7WnOrn

Found only in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, #bonobos are our closest animal relatives and are increasingly vulnerable. A groundbreaking study, recently highlighted in an interview with @MongabayOrg's @CharlesMpaka, reveals that their population is at even greater risk than previously thought, with only about 20,000 individuals spread across 500,000 square kilometers.
Published in @currentbiology, this research examines bonobo genetic diversity within and between populations, which is critical to understanding how to protect these gentle apes.
In the interview, @p_muruthi, Vice President of Species Conservation and Science at @AWF_Official, emphasized the importance of this study in the fight to save bonobos from extinction.
Due to instability in their #habitat, bonobos have historically been less studied than other primates. This new data brings a renewed sense of urgency to conservation efforts, providing insights that could help secure their future.
