Here’s the latest image of our flagship Demo4 high temperature #superconducting (HTS) #fusion magnet system as it reaches a significant milestone! The installation of the poloidal field (PF) coils into their enclosures and their fastening around the toroidal field (TF) limbs marks the completion of the core magnet build.
Over the past few months, our team has been busy mechanically and electrically connecting the TF limbs, installing the neutron simulating heaters, and added the bulk of the 600 sensors we'll be using to measure the magnetic fields, voltages, temperatures, and strains. The core magnet has been hung from the top plate, and the current leads have been joined.
HTS magnets are an incredible technology, paving the way for commercial #fusionenergy and offering the potential to transform the performance and efficiency of applications from electric motors to scientific analysis.
Demo4 represents the world’s first set of high-field HTS #magnets in a tokamak configuration. With operations set for the second half of this year, we aim to gain crucial insights into the performance and interaction of these ground-breaking magnets, paving the way for energy-producing fusion pilot plants. This is a vital step on the path to limitless, clean and secure fusion energy⚡️

@BillBailey Fusion research is my job. PhD in plasma physics, now in engineering. Where to start... Do you have questions? Till then, fun facts: plasma temperature is 150 million C, magnets metres away at -270 C, plasma current in mega amps, heat to the wall is like space shuttle re-entry 😳
Hi @BillBailey. I'm Steve the nuclear physicist from last night's show. We actually heat fusion fuel to 10 times the sun's core temperature (the sun has more time & fuel than we do). Sorry, hard to explain in that moment 😅 Anyway, great show. We enjoyed it soooo much. Thanks 😁
