🚨Lisandro Martínez on Alejandro Garnacho not attending Lionel Messi’s farewell ceremony:
🗣️ Reporter: “Garnacho wasn’t there for Messi’s farewell. You know him well did that surprise you?”
🗣️ Lisandro Martínez:
“Not really, no.
I think people were surprised because they expected every young Argentine player to be there for Messi’s farewell.
But Alejandro has always been very clear about who his idol is.
For him, Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest. That’s the player he grew up watching, the player whose mentality he tries to copy, the player he talks about whenever you ask him about his heroes.
So when people asked me, ‘Why wasn’t Garnacho there for Messi?’ I said, ‘Ask Garnacho.’
I actually spoke to him about it.
I said, ‘Garna, everyone is going to ask why you didn’t go.’
He said, ‘Licha, what do you want me to do? Pretend?’
I said, ‘Pretend what?’
He said, ‘That Messi is my idol.’
And I started laughing.
He said, ‘I respect Leo. Of course I respect him. He’s one of the greatest footballers ever. But Cristiano is my guy. I grew up watching Cristiano.’
Then he said something very Garnacho.
‘If Cristiano was saying goodbye, you wouldn’t need to ask me if I’d be there.’
That ended the conversation.
He wasn’t trying to disrespect Messi.
He just didn’t feel the same emotional connection.
And I think that’s something people need to understand. You can respect a legend without pretending that person was your hero.
For Garnacho, that hero has always been Cristiano.
So while everyone was saying goodbye to Messi, Alejandro was probably somewhere watching Cristiano clips and thinking about how he can do the SIUU properly without getting booked.
That’s Garnacho.
He doesn’t follow the crowd.
He follows his idol.”
