@PaulSkallas Disagree - But I go to school in TN, which heavily criminalises weed. People smoke plenty, but it is *not* more popular than alcohol. As for tattoos, 90% don’t have a visible tattoo but I suppose I can’t say they don’t have one. Don’t know a girl with a tattoo at school though…
@SoVeryBritish Only on some sandwiches — grilled cheese, lobster roll, cucumber. You know, sandwiches where butter tastes good. No one else besides Britain does the indiscriminate buttering
@PhilWMagness How, exactly, does Chris’ post show that Neoliberalism is alive and well? I tend to agree that it’s on its last legs … the Trumpian and ultra progressive currents are threatening it on both sides.
@JasonIsbell watched the documentary last night and wanted to say thanks… a lot of the stories behind the songs, maybe especially dreamsicle, resonated and it felt good to know someone else has been there.
@DougDeMuro what should I buy that’s under $10k, fun, and reliable? I have a garage of headaches, I just want a daily that won’t break my wallet anymore.
@endofanerajc Depends on time period. In the Early Modern period, especially brutal and especially public punishments did serve a social control function - law enforcement was lacking and most crimes went uncaught. Public executions were like a political way to say “we’re in charge”
@RickGarnett@DavidLat@StanfordLaw@EdWhelanEPPC I think it was well put when someone said that not every 1A issue is a free speech issue, and not every free speech issue is a 1A issue. We can talk about liberal values without talking about the constitution
@lvamsgatthebeep Why not just make a new dress? She took a nice looking dress that had been preserved, and ruined it. What’s the point of that? Just start fresh, and leave the original for someone who will appreciate it
@bad_histories@MalcolmNance That’s really odd logic, but in a more basic sense, Crimea was only shunted over to Ukraine in 1954, for reasons that we’ll probably never know, but that likely reflect a mix of corruption and not wanting to rebuild the place.
@dk_munro The first list is a respectable list of the ten most famous philosophers. Unfortunately, much of written history has favoured western males (that’s just the reality of the power dynamic, about who was able to publish influential books)
@JoshuaHedley I think the issue is that we know that they (people who “don’t like country music”) have probably only heard the really shitty stuff on the radio. So at least I feel some duty to say “hey, there’s a lot out there that isn’t what you dislike, and that’s actually real country”
