As the country prepares for the development of the Ksh 2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery project, the Port of Lamu welcomed MV Da Yang carrying heavy construction materials that will be utilized in the project.
Laden with 2,930 metric tons of heavy machinery, the arrival of MV Da Yang sets the stage for the anticipated groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the first ever oil refinery north of Kenya planned for next week.
The refinery will process crude oil from Lokichar in Turkana County, and other parts of East and southern Africa and beyond, before supplying refined petroleum products to regional markets.
The port of Lamu will play a central role through supporting marine operations and handling petroleum tankers thereby boosting the Port’s operations.
Kenya Ports Authority PLC Chief Executive Officer Captain William Ruto welcomed the maiden vessel and successfully brought it alongside before presenting a certificate of first call and a plaque to the vessel’s master Captain Wang Shengli.
Captain Ruto said the vessel’s arrival was significant to the refinery project and demonstrated the Government’s commitment to ensuring its success.
“The arrival of this vessel is very critical and shows the Government’s commitment to ensuring this project succeeds. It will be a game changer for the entire region,” said Captain Ruto.
He assured shipping partners and customers that the Port of Lamu is fully prepared to handle current and future cargo volumes, with KPA committed to efficient vessel turnaround, seamless cargo operations and customer-focused services that meet international standards.
Siaya is officially at the center of Kenya’s energy future. Today in Vienna at the 70th IAEA General Conference, I led our delegation in a strategic meeting with IAEA Deputy Director General Hua Liu to secure vital technical framework support, technology transfer, and rigorous safety oversight for the proposed Siaya Nuclear Power Plant.
This landmark project will anchor regional economic transformation through clean, reliable baseload power while unlocking massive infrastructure growth, new jobs, specialized skills, and fresh investment for our people. Joined by Principal Secretaries Prof. Abdulrazak Shaukat and Dr. Idris Salim Dokota alongside NuPEA CEO Justus Wabuyabo, we are working hand in hand with the National Government to drive Kenya's modern energy frontier.
Our commitment to you remains unwavering: public safety, community voice, and environmental protection will be at the core of every single step.

The transformation of Nairobi into a smart, modern and liveable city is deeply intertwined with environmental conservation.
This vision is being realized through the Nairobi River Basin Regeneration Programme, which is restoring the river system into a cleaner, safer and greener public asset while renewing the urban spaces and communities along its banks.
The work stretches across the river corridor, with different interventions advancing simultaneously.
At Globe Roundabout, major drainage works and river-sewage separation are underway, alongside preparations for a future public recreation space.
At Baba Dogo, a pedestrian bridge has been completed while sections of the 27-kilometre twin trunk sewer are being laid.
In Lucky Summer, the river is being widened, deepened and dredged, with gabions reinforcing its banks and riparian areas being cleared.
At Dandora, sewer trenches are being excavated, wastewater treatment infrastructure is being expanded and efforts are beginning to address pollution around the dumpsite.
Ngomongo is undergoing intensive clearing of solid waste and restoration of drainage channels, while at Kamukunji, riparian encroachments have been removed and a community centre, sports field and spectator facilities completed.
At Gikomba, riverbanks are being cleared and levelled to make way for a better-organised market environment, while the Kariobangi wastewater treatment plant expansion is progressing to strengthen downstream pollution control.
Through the ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative, thousands of young people, particularly from the settlements along the river corridor, have secured employment in clean-up, rehabilitation and environmental restoration activities.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting implementation through National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), helping connect national climate action with communities on the ground. MORE PICS - https://t.co/8YEWiKNhU0

For Special Economic Zones (SEZ) to attract and retain investment, industrial development must be matched by efficient transport infrastructure that connects businesses to markets, ports and logistics networks.
The ongoing construction of the Economic Zone 1 Road within the Dongo Kundu SEZ in Mombasa is a key investment in creating that connectivity.
Implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (@KeNHAKenya), the road forms the principal internal transport corridor within Phase I of the SEZ, providing access for heavy commercial traffic and linking industrial plots to critical transport infrastructure.
It connects directly to the Mombasa Southern Bypass, while enhancing access to the Port of Mombasa, Moi International Airport, Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) cargo corridors and the planned Dongo Kundu Port Berth.
The project is expected to improve the movement of goods and services, strengthen the attractiveness of the SEZ to investors and support job creation and industrial growth along the Coast.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to support the delivery of the project by promoting road safety, maintaining a secure operating environment and strengthening coordination among relevant agencies, helping safeguard critical economic infrastructure and sustain investor confidence within the Dongo Kundu SEZ.
