Same principle, two countries, two different products: give people who smoke safer, appealing alternatives and keep them accessible.

@nyuniversity's David Abrams, in a new piece for @scienceline, says that anti-vaping misinformation is "tantamount to murder."
Strong words. He's completely right.
Cochrane reviews consistently found vaping is twice as effective as patches and gum for quitting smoking.
Vaping delivers a small fraction of the risks of cigarettes. This is not contested by any serious scientist anywhere.
But scare campaigns aimed at teenagers have poisoned the well for adult smokers too. Only 12% of American smokers now think vaping is less harmful than smoking. The actual figure, for the record, is dramatically less harmful.
As Abrams puts it, the message millions of smokers are receiving amounts to "either quit everything or die."
That's not public health. That's ideology with a body count.

New book 📕 incl. chapter by me - ‘Preventing perverse effects of public health policy is also harm reduction. Potential risk in some tobacco control interventions for Indigenous peoples.’ One example is co-opting police & the judicial system to enforce compliance with no smoking policies.
Yesterday, we took our big boy 🐑 Rammy to a new home. He seems okay with that. He’s a curious dude. Completely comfortable with his prowess, like a King who’s never been challenged. In the photo he’s fascinated by some piglets, a small being he’s never encountered.
Our small-lifestyle block neighbours have been asking us for a few years to do something about Rammy. They don’t want any more lambs. They had enough sheep to maintain the paddocks and keep the freezer stocked. Rammy has no respect for fences and no fear. If there’s a ewe, there’s a way he’ll get to her.
It’s taken a while for us to find him a new home. Sheep have been devalued in NZ (at least in urban-edge Auckland). If we took one of the daughter’s gutted car bodies to a scrap metal dealer at least we’d get a tuppence for it, but with Rammy, we couldn’t even give him away. Until yesterday, but the guy was going to charge us $100 to come pick him up!
Unlike the gutted MX5 garden ornaments, it was easy to walk Rammy up onto the trailer. He’d follow Steve & a bucket of pellets anywhere. And we got to drop him off feeling good knowing he’ll have a larger field to play. And, what a gift to give on Valentine’s Day, a lover for a flock.
Happy National Lamb Day!
People with NZ Polynesian tribal genealogy (collectively called Māori) are DIVERSE. No one person or small group of people who have Māori ancestry represent all, or even what identifying as Māori means, or what constitutes Māori culture. Every individual with a Māori ancestor, no matter their blood quantum, colour of their skin, ability to speak the Māori language or sing, or their spiritual or religious beliefs, or their political ideology- every one of them has the same right to be who they are, have their unique purpose, have their own opinion and voice that. They may or may not have an opinion on Māori-anything. That’s their right. We don’t all agree with each other.
Genealogical makeup does not give any human, regardless of their sex, colour, size, age, attractiveness, wealth, intelligence or political power, the right to abuse, violate, defraud, rob, rape, murder or defile anyone else.
The willingness of a person to intimidate, bully, lie, deceive and manipulate, steal from, defame, bash, rape, slash, and burn others is what defines them and is how they should be judged.
I have Māori, Irish & English ancestry. I do not support the people who are trying to have everyone believe that the way they are (abusive, manipulative, thieving and hateful) is representative of Māori culture, Māori people or Māori beliefs. Many people exploit/appropriate culture for their own gain. A person’s behaviour, the way they act, dress, speak / yell, the flags and symbols they wear - that’s their personal story and reveals mostly who they are and their purpose (ie to do good vs to hurt).
Be careful. It’s been estimated that about 10% of people are psychopaths. They commonly seek positions of influence and power. Some people have mental health conditions. Some people are empty - easily manipulated into becoming wind-up dolls. Some people are greedy conmen. Some people have emotional scars self-inflicted by their deep jealousy of others. They ooze hate. It’s a shame, but not everyone is motivated to do good.
Your family, extended family, is your first and most important ‘tribe’. Stay close. Protect your family first. Beware of fake ‘tribes’ and cults. Learn how to recognise that you are being played. Be especially alert for the many and multi-layered brainwashing/psyops being rolled out through once ethical and trusted institutions, eg MSM, Universities, Schools, Government agencies. There are many useful accounts on @X that can help you with learning about these and how to develop your 🐂💩, 👼🏼 vs 👿 radar.
