The same bottle design used for wasp traps works for flies — just change the bait. Five minutes to build, no chemicals, and it targets house flies, fruit flies, and compost flies without any risk to bees or other beneficial insects. 🪰
How to build it:
Cut a 2-liter plastic bottle about two-thirds of the way up. Invert the top section and fit it back into the bottom half like a funnel pointing downward. Tape or wire the two sections together to hold the funnel in place.
The bait:
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
Mix and pour into the bottom chamber. Flies enter following the smell and can't navigate back out through the narrow inverted funnel opening.
Where to place it: near a compost bin, garbage area, or anywhere fly pressure is high. Keep it in the shade — direct sun heats the liquid, speeds fermentation, and shortens the effective window.
Refresh the bait every five to seven days. The trap loses effectiveness as the liquid ferments out and the attractant fades.
One honest note: bottle traps are effective at reducing fly populations near a specific point source — compost, waste areas, outdoor dining. They won't eliminate flies across a yard. Used consistently near the problem area they make a real difference in fly pressure. No insecticides, no cost past the first build.
