Eddie Howe identified with and created the culture that the fans need at Newcastle. A team that gives everything and physically dominates games. A team that won the game in the first half hour with sheer intensity. Players who celebrated tackles. Players who connected with fans.

There was no greater example of this intensity than in the game against Liverpool at Wembley, which saw them lift the trophy.

Howe was getting the best out of all of his players.

With any manager, there needs to be evolution. Arteta spoke about keeping their best parts of the game while building on other parts. Howe recognised this also. The in-possession work needed improvement but could not be detrimental to the identity that Howe and Newcastle had created.

Therein lies the problem: the foundations were set to build on, but football doesn’t always work like that. Howe questioned recruitment at a club level. He wanted more control, but the manager's role does not now involve the time needed to recruit to the level needed. Newcastle need to improve the model. They can’t fish in the same sea as the big six, but neither seem to have the data and recruitment model that Brighton or Brentford have. Newcastle were losing their best players and replacing them with 4/5th choice players at a desperate time in the market while overpaying.

In looking to improve the in-possession work, Newcastle lost their edge out of possession. This was highlighted with Woltemade in a midfield role, a role that was epitomised by Joelinton. Champions League football meant less time on the training pitch and exploited the lack of depth in the squad.

Players who had peaked, Trippier a prime example, and gave the club their best moments started to decline, and that clear identity was questioned by players. Dan Burn: ‘We need to get back to being horrible to play against’.

It was a culmination of events where Howe has looked and thought - I can't control this.

The job is a huge one. The fans don’t ask for a possession-based team and manager. The identity created by Howe was in line with everything that Newcastle are about. They have to be careful with recruiting the right manager. Slow build-up, retaining on transition, may create more control, but there is an expectation up there that fits within a culture that wants an intensity and work rate that matches the values of the people.

Isak - club adamant he wouldn’t be sold because Chairman said so. He then met with Isak personally agreed to sale & club stance changed

Bruno - club stance is they don’t want to sell but will if offer high enough. But no formal contact yet
