I once went through a remote software engineering interview, passed the technical stages, and still lost the opportunity to someone who had connections I didn't have.

What hurt me most was that I knew the person they eventually hired.

I'm Emmanuel, a software engineer. Like many developers trying to build a career in Nigeria, I've spent countless hours learning, building projects, fixing bugs, and applying for remote jobs.

People sometimes think that once you know how to code, getting a remote job becomes easy.

It doesn't.

You can spend years learning JavaScript, building applications, understanding databases, and improving your backend skills, only to submit hundreds of applications without getting a single interview.

And when an interview finally comes, you know you cannot afford to take it lightly.

That was exactly how I felt when I got an opportunity with a company I genuinely wanted to work for.

I prepared for the interviews. I revised technical concepts, went through my projects, and practised explaining why I had made certain decisions in my code.

When I passed the initial stages, I became hopeful.

When I passed the technical assessment, I became even more hopeful.

For the first time in a while, I allowed myself to imagine what getting that job would mean for me.

It wasn't just about the salary.

It was about having my efforts recognised. It was about knowing that the time I had spent learning this profession was opening doors. It was about moving closer to the kind of career I had been working towards.

Then the company made its decision.

They chose another candidate.

I was disappointed, but I tried to accept it professionally. Companies are allowed to choose who they believe is the best fit.

What made the situation difficult was what I found out afterwards.

The person they hired was someone I knew personally.
