But here's what it really looked like: British officials walking out of India with an estimated $45 trillion worth of wealth over nearly two centuries of colonial rule. Not borrowed. Not traded. Taken.

While they looted diamonds, spices, textiles, and entire industries, they told Indians they were bringing progress. Meanwhile, famines killed millions—not because of drought, but because grain was being shipped to Britain while people starved in the streets.

In South Africa, they extracted gold and diamonds using forced labor, built an empire on black bodies, and called it economic development. In Congo, King Leopold II's reign alone killed an estimated 10 million people while rubber and ivory flowed to Europe. In Nigeria, they drew borders that ignored centuries of culture and governance, then left behind a state designed to be dependent, divided, and unstable.

After the theft, the violence, and the deliberate underdevelopment, they had the audacity to call African and Asian nations lazy, poor, and uncivilized.

This wasn't just colonialism. It was organized extraction on an industrial scale. The wealth of the West was built, in large part, on the systematic impoverishment of the rest.

Today, some of those same nations lecture about debt, corruption, and governance—conveniently forgetting the centuries they spent making sure these regions would never stand on equal footing.

The evidence is in the museums, the archives, the GDP graphs, and the stolen artifacts still sitting in European institutions.

So when someone says a country is poor, maybe the better question is: who made them poor, and where did the wealth go?

Should reparations and restitution be part of the conversation about global inequality today?
