Teacher working conditions are student learning conditions. We need time, support, and autonomy & we need it before we lose more teachers. We need relief now!
JCPS teachers…any of this sound familiar!??
“surveyed well over 1,000 teachers and leaders about what they would de-implement….some of the answers were high-stakes testing, faculty meetings, PLC meetings, and districtwide trainings.”

Important to know that paying the full costs of busing kids to & from school is a state responsibility under law. But it's one the legislature has skipped since 2005. Despite billions now in the rainy day fund, the state still pays only 70% of these costs in the current budget.
"We know trans children exist," one teacher said. "Even more so, we know that they deserve to exist. ... They exist, they are real and they are in pain, asking for us to stand with and protect them."

So many people complaining about a teacher shortage. Then they turn around and start shouting that Teachers:
1. are grooming children.
2. are over paid.
3. can’t be trusted to set curriculum.
4. need to keep our kids safe from school shootings.
I see why we have a shortage…
Right now, a throng of students & adults are shouting on the steps of Ky Capitol Annex protesting SB150, which includes a ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth. Leg is expected to override Beshear’s veto today or tomorrow. They’re shouting, “Trans rights are human rights”
Thank you to Ms. Ellis, a retired teacher, for ending tonight's board meeting by focusing on the teacher shortage. She is right that most of what has been done has just been a band-aid for our problems and not real sustainable solutions.
Student teaching is messed up in two directions.
The student teacher isn’t paid to do their full-time work. And the lead teacher isn’t paid to mentor someone in a full-time situation.
Like so many aspects of public education, the system exploits anyone who cares about children.
If we want to stop the shortage, teachers needed to be treated like the professionals that they are and given time to focus on teaching. Check out this petition if you support teachers: https://t.co/OakOpcmwFP
Schools don't need partisan bickering, CRT conspiracies, or phony charter school nonsense. They need a desperate surge of increased wages to hopefully stop the bleeding of losing all staff. After that, we can get into specifics, but that has to come first.
This downward spiral of education is directly connected to the corporatization of education. This presents itself in outsourcing but also in the mindset it rewards.
The staffing crisis affects every single aspect of school on a daily basis.
Are our leaders responding like we are in crisis? Or, still acting like it is business as usual?
Let’s start a list…what is some low hanging fruit? Things your school or district could easily do that would make your job easier or help you feel more appreciated?
