๐ฃ๏ธ โYou see this? This is the queen. She's smart, she's fast. She moves any way she wants, as far as she wants. And she is the go-get-shit-done piece.โ
One of my favourite quotes from "The Wire", for one of my favourite fighters to watch โ not just in ONE Championship, but all of combat sports.
After Allycia Hellen Rodrigues beat Phetjeeja to retain her atomweight Muay Thai world title at The Inner Circle 19, her coach Leo Elias smiled and said: โNow we know who is the real queen.โ
Hard to argue.
The Brazilian is quiet and unassuming in person. Always smiling, always generous with her time whenever Iโve interviewed her or been around her during fight weeks.
Then the bell rings, and she turns into an absolute gangster.
Those broad, hunched shoulders. The stalking pressure. That calm, cold march forward as she starts piecing up her prey.
People doubted her against Stamp. She won the title.
People doubted her against interim champ Janet Todd, after a two-and-a-half-year layoff for pregnancy and early motherhood. She unified the belts.
People doubted her when she moved up to face Smilla Sundell. It was brief, but in that first round she arguably gave Smilla more trouble than almost anyone did in ONE.
And people doubted her against Phetjeeja. Again, she rose to the occasion.
Yes, people are debating the decision. That is part of the sport. But Rodrigues is a worthy champion.
And she is not just an inspiration to mothers. She is an inspiration to fathers like me, too.
For most of us, balancing kids and work can feel impossible. Rodrigues has not just kept going since becoming a mother โ she has levelled up.
โAfter I became a mum I came to a different level,โ she said after beating Phetjeeja. โI proved it one more time and Iโm gonna keep proving it every time I come here.โ
Salute to her.
Still only 28, with so much ahead of her. She has talked about switching to MMA, and has been drilling her ground game with Elias. Donโt bet against her becoming a two-sport champ. Or three โ maybe the Phetjeeja rematch comes for the Thaiโs ONE atomweight kickboxing world title.
So many options.
What is certain is ONE Championship has a superstar on its hands: a fearless mother, a quiet killer, and a queen who keeps getting shit done.
