@Idrewabird@marlo_safi I think we’re just approaching it from different perspectives.
I don’t think it’s fair to say she was out of touch with reality. There were absolutely big things happening that she doesn’t capture, but I don’t think she ever set out to, nor would having done so improve her books
@Idrewabird@marlo_safi She is very reflective of the social dynamics she observed, one of the reasons she is celebrated is because of her insight into the Regency-era!
Her satire is funny and worth reading because it strikes at real issues.
I don’t even think we disagree on much here.
@Idrewabird@marlo_safi There are layers to her characters, few are fully mocked or celebrated. They explore broader social dynamics and carry positive and negative critiques.
Austen paints may characters less charitably than Elizabeth and the novel is explicit Elizabeth is in the right on many points.
@Idrewabird@marlo_safi Austen’s characters aren’t just points of ridicule. There is a mix of how she treats the characters, but rarely are they held in contempt.
I don’t disagree that a lot of the story is lost by not understanding the time period. Nuances in class distinctions define many characters.
@Idrewabird@marlo_safi Colonel Brandon served in India if your complaint is that none of the men deployed.
Genuinely confused what you’re even mad about. Military men were featured in her books and their service impacted the characters and plot. She didn’t ignore the military or its impact.
@kenshirotism Nothing to indicate he was ever on board with getting himself hurt.
He wanted to pick a fight, unclear to me yet if he intended to kill someone or if he just lacked any regard for human life.
@ShawnaNonna@SarahisCensored There is only the data originally captured with the camera.
Running it through software to “clear it up” means the software adds information or makes assumptions to try and create a higher resolution image.
This makes it difficult to authenticate.
@Paul_Melman@GarrettPetersen@razibkhan This is interesting, but given that he was likely able to get away with carrying this knife due to the exclusion around the Kirpan I’m not sure it shifts the discussion much aside from adding a technicality to the mix.
@GarrettPetersen You never know. People survive the unthinkable all the time, even if it was likely he was already too far gone, it’s impossible to say that getting there sooner or treating him better might not have made a difference.
Also, it’s no excuse so they shouldn’t be saying it anyway.
@MemeticDesigns@starsandtigers I mean, the people sharing the AI image of Alex Pretti did a lot to undermine themselves and their attempts to honor him as the person he was.
Same principle is at play here.
The reality is horrific, it doesn’t need a coat of paint to make look bad.
@SlumRNA_Dog The same problem as people sharing the doctored image of Alex Pretti.
When the truth is already bad enough you don’t need to edit images or create propaganda to make your point.
Makes people seem gullible and/or disingenuous for sharing the fake image earnestly.
@talexratcliffe@memeticsisyphus But it does work, it’s the norm in many places.
It only doesn’t work where people wrongly take it as a personal insult because they aren’t used to it.
@MillennialWoes@captive_dreamer I mean, do you have any politicians worth supporting at this point?
Directionally correct lip service seems at least a step up from what’s been going on.
