'Whale hello there! Scientific Outreach, Festival Edition'
This time around, PhD student Rachel Lennon (@Rach_lenn) writes about the importance of public outreach within scientific research. A great read!

Two marine #entanglement cases were reported last week. A 9.6m #humpbackwhale found in Edinburgh with rope entanglement scars, and a 5.75m #minkewhale on the Angus coast with severe tail injuries. Images, measurements & samples suggest rope entanglement was likely cause of death.
Entanglement is the #1 cause of death for minke and humpback whales in Scottish waters, with 9 cases this year. SMASS is taking positive steps with the Scottish Entanglement Alliance @Tangly_Seas, and the fishing industry to reduce entanglements and protect marine wildlife.
🐋 A new report shows a surge in minke whale sightings but fewer basking sharks. This valuable @HWDT_org research is allowing us to track how whales and basking sharks are faring over the long-term off the west coast of Scotland. https://t.co/sA5r1incqL
🎶💃 Join us to celebrate 30 years of whale conservation in the Hebrides with a special Whaley Ceilidh. Dust-off your dancing shoes with live music from Hannah Fisher and Sorren McLean, special Nc'nean Distillery cocktails and great raffle prizes! https://t.co/WZmc2fhv7M
Had a fascinating few hours yesterday helping the lovely Peter take measures and samples of this harbour porpoise for @strandings 🌊🐳 So cool to see this little cetacean up close!
Anybody any thoughts on what the banana shaped markings might be?
Tessa brought so much to the #SMASS team and her presence is sorely missed. Wishing you all the luck in your new position (but we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for your return!) 🫶🐳
It has been an absolute privilege to work with and learn from the @strandings team over the past several years 🐳♥️
I miss you guys already! 🥲🏴—>🇨🇦
