Ghost Fishing UK is returning to Shetland for a week of Ghost Gear Recovery during the last week of May '24. It is looking to raise awareness with the fishing community so they can start reporting any lost gear to them.
It’s here! Our report on recent work with creel fishermen on the west coast, trialling sinking line to reduce entanglement risk. Read it here:

Positive results from tests using weighted ropes for creeling to try reduce risk of 'floating' ropes between pots - as shown in this pic we got going over creels recently - that can get caught in baleen & round fins.
Good work from @CreelScff, @whalesorg

I never fully appreciated just how BIG this dolphin species is 🐬
White-beaked #dolphin, live stranded across the Firth of Forth from #Edinburgh🏴
Every stranding is an opportunity to collect data and samples to support cetacean research! #EveryDataPointCounts#Fife#Ecology
It was great to speak to Mark Stephen from @BBCRadioScot's Out of Doors 🌳 about minke whales on the west coast of Scotland🐳🏴 Check out for @denrisch's section on baleen whale vocalisation too. You can listen to the episode here: https://t.co/BUtwVK61W0
A juvenile #humpbackwhale stranded on the weekend at Annat bay with lesions indicative of entanglement. Absence of material makes it impossible to say the source but entanglement could have occurred anywhere, emphasising the need for good, global fisheries management 🐳
Big thanks to the skipper and crew of the Karen Jeanne for taking us out dungeness crab fishing today on our knowledge exchange on all things fishing, bycatch and entanglement
a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn how small scale & artisanal fishers in the US and Mexico are navigating bycatch and entanglement issues
These insights will allow us to contribute to how Scotland addresses these challenges
@MairiGougeon
@ScotGovMarine@FishmongersCo
Can't thank these guys enough for taking the time to share their experience with us and big thanks to @FishmongersCo@Mar_tDoeschate@Tangly_Seas@Dunnachie3@CreelScff
And the amazing team at Mexico marine wildlife rescue centre
for making this knowledge exchange possible.
@CreelScff@Bluemarinef@Mar_tDoeschate@Dunnachie3@embulled_@Tangly_Seas Honour to meet Miguel and hear all about how Mexico has protected their artisanal inshore fishing sector with restrictions on shrimp trawling & also on how keen the local fishermen are to protect their environment
Scotland could really learn a thing or two here!
@MairiGougeon
Too windy for Miguel to take us out on his boat so instead he treated us to a meal of ceviche and an afternoon of interviews about the Fishing community of San Carlos, how the fishermen work alongside the Gray whales and his life fishing there
Big thanks to our interpreter
Very inspiring to see the vision of this small fishing community at Puerto Chale, who now transition between fishing&tourism achieving lower impact of both🐋🐟#WinWin🦀. When your gulls are healthy populations of pelicans, ospreys, and frigate birds,you're doing something right👌
Packing a lot in these last few days; meeting fishermen discussing common challenges in small scale fisheries. Quote for thought from a Mexican fisherman, speaking to @CreelScff "wow, I thought this problem was only here, but you in Scotland are the same" solutions could be too..
