Love the NBA, but I found this very illuminating. It’s not always clear what it means to work for justice, but I’m pretty confident these sponsorships run in the face of it
The @NBA is suddenly changing course. For 75 years, NBA players and coaches have stood up against injustice. But today, the NBA has a $300M sponsorship with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE also sponsors a genocidal militia in Sudan with weapons & drones that kill civilians.
The NBA made the wrong call. End the @emirates deal.

Public officials may opine about theology, as is their right.
The Successor of Peter teaches. This is his office.
If what he teaches doesn’t sound like what we want to hear, we should admit the likelihood that the problem is in what we want to hear, and not in what he teaches.
A moving farewell Mass for Bishop Mario Aviles who moves from auxiliary in Brownsville to become the ninth bishop of Corpus Christi. “What a privilege for us to gift this shepherd to the people of God in Corpus” -Bishop Flores
“We live in a world…that is governed by strength, by force, by power. These are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of time.” -Stephen Miller
Is this the worldview we operate in? I lean more towards: “power is made perfect in weakness.” But just call me a Christian
Grateful to be able to share reflections on the current reality, and then have a great interview with Cardinal Tobin about becoming a Church that listens, including to the cry of migrants living in fear across the country
In this crossover episode of AMDG & the Jesuit Border Podcast, we hear from both Fr. @StrassburgerSJ, exec. director of Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministries, and @CardinalJWTobin about immigration & the church's role in accompanying the most vulnerable.

Thrilled by the new stained glass addition to the Basilica in San Juan, TX. Blessed Miguel Pro, SJ, is a Mexican martyr who extended his arms in the sign of the cross as a firing squad took aim. “Viva Cristo Rey!” Photos of his death galvanized the faithful across the country
Mass this afternoon at the Basilica, altar servers from Starr County received their years of service awards.
The stained glass window of Bl Miguel Pro is newly installed above the entrance to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
Grateful for the delegation from El Paso that visited with Pope Leo to share messages from migrants in the US. May we as a church speak out against injustice & stand with people in our communities who are living in fear and terror as they continue to be criminalized and targeted
Today, with @BishopSeitz and members of the immigrant community, @HopeBorder met Pope Leo and gave him messages and a video from those fearing Trump’s mass deportations. ‘The church cannot stay silent before injustice. You stand with me. And I stand with you’, the pope said.
Celebrating 60 yrs of Diocese of Brownsville, Bishop Flores reminds us: our challenge is to know Christ, who is the way. Regardless of what the world says: hatred, violence, treating classes of people like they don’t matter- that’s not the way. Christ is the way. Remain in him
Blessings to Pope Leo as he celebrates his 70th birthday. For my 40th last year, I visited the last of the 50 US states I hadn’t been to. I wonder how many states the pope has been to in his life?? I doubt it’s 50, but I’ll bet it’s more than any other pope in history!
Dear friends, today I turn seventy years old. I give thanks to the Lord and to my parents; and I thank all those who have remembered me in their prayers.
Pope Leo XIV expresses profound sorrow over the murder of two children and the injuring of 17 others at the Annunciation Catholic church and school complex in the US city of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Today we celebrate the memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven, also invoked as Queen of Peace. Let us fast and pray to implore the Lord for the gift of peace. Let us #PrayTogether that hearts may be freed from hatred, that we may move beyond the logic of division and retaliation, and that a shared vision inspired by the common good may prevail.
I’m inspired by Bishop Pham and my Jesuit brothers who have led the efforts for immigration court accompaniment in San Diego. We have had a rotation of priests and religious women attending court in Harlingen, but this project makes me think we could be doing more
An auxiliary bishop sprinkled holy water on 70 volunteers Monday, Aug. 4, as Bishop Michael Pham launched a new ministry in the San Diego Diocese, which has nearly 1.4 million Catholics. https://t.co/BTuIwdO5E2
Just to be clear, ICE is not just targeting criminals or even people who entered illegally. People like Carlos entered legally and were following the legal process. This new tactic is trying to criminalize, detain, and deport without due process. I call that injustice
The Trump administration has made sweeping changes to the country’s immigration system.
In recent months, ICE agents have been arresting migrants outside courtrooms and courthouses. Many of them are being seized immediately after immigration judges had terminated their cases, often at the request of the federal government.
@WmBrangham speaks to @StrassburgerSJ, a Jesuit Priest who serves migrants on both sides of the border, for more.
Great to have Ignatius join us for Mass and cake in migrant shelters in Reynosa, Mexico. “En todo amar y servir” (in all things, to love and to serve). Happy Feast of St Ignatius- may our love for the Lord and one another manifest itself more in deeds than words
Join us! New York City 9/14-9/16. I’m humbled to be invited to participate in this event hosted by the Center for Migration Studies and Fordham University. See more info in the 🧵
In these turbulent times, CMS and @FordhamNYC will bring together the migrant-serving community for our annual #ImmigrantIntegrationConvening, Supporting Migrants and Refugees: Finding Hope in a Time of Peril.
Meet some of our speakers! ⬇️
I’ve learned so much from migrants that I’ve had the privilege to accompany, especially about hope amid despair. Pope Leo: “Their courage & tenacity bear heroic testimony to a faith that sees beyond what our eyes can see”
“Migrants who come into court are trying to follow the rules, do things the right way. They aren’t trying to evade the law, they aren’t illegals in our country. They are documented migrants and the govt is using this strategy just to subject them to expedited removal”
Thanks to @ThomasWenski for his outspoken advocacy for human dignity. Let’s pray that the archdiocese gets swift approval to provide Mass for detainees in the Everglades detention center. Everyone deserves access to the sacraments. Everyone.
Sunday PM about 25 Knights on Bikes stopped at entrance of Alligator Alcatraz and prayed a rosary for the detainees. Archdiocese is still waiting for approval to access to provide Mass for detainees

“God does not fault one who does not go to Mass out of fear, he faults those who cause the fear.” Our immigration enforcement strategy is based primarily on creating fear. God finds fault in that, and so should we. Thanks for your prophetic voice, @bpdflores
XV Sunday
On the Good Samaritan, the Church & the situation in our communities.
-Dios no culpa a quien no va a misa por miedo, culpa a quien causa el miedo.
