They have powers over the water, differing from the mermaids in your presentation who control people more so than the water.

@mermaidgorl @YouTube #HON436 I got the audiobook for The Deep on a whim and Daveed Diggs was the narrator for it! I’ve never seen Hamilton or his other works but I really enjoyed his narration. I got it on an app called https://t.co/lYzO0FcOT7 which is like audible but for local bookstores!

@Olivia35880779 @mermaidgorl #HON436 agreed! I’m so glad that when Yetu and Oori we’re talking about wajinru reproduction/intercourse, that it is so fluid- either party could be “male” or “female” and this gender and sexual fluidity was so casually discussed and with no backlash!

@mermaidgorl #HON436 I loved this article! It was cool to see the mention of whales’ high level of melanin to protect themselves from UV radiation. Scientifically and in Disney lore, mermaids don’t have to be white! I’ve also wondered do mermaids have to look so human?

#HON436 this passage from pg 150 reminds me of a Striga from Albanian mytho, & in the Witcher movie and books. The baby is “cursed” within the womb and knows only rage & hunger, which the wajinru felt before Yetu returned. Also, it’s interesting to think of the womb as an ocean.

@Elizabe68988415 #HON436 I think this is a good question! My opinion is that they are worshiping her power and control over their identities as individuals because our experiences define who we are, and only Yetu really knows who they are.

@mermaidgorl #HON436 I took a Philosophy of Death class at uofl & we debated on whether a person’s soul is more than their memory or just in their experiences, especially in patients w/ brain injuries. If memory is the “soul”, then it is a form of death

@Elizabe68988415 #HON436 and the emotions that whale songs project! In Star Trek: The Voyage Home (which I HIGHLY recommend you watch for your archive!) they talk about how whale songs are so emotional & impactful on other life forms!

@Olivia35880779 #HON436 I really like that perspective on consuming any form of art. I also think this perspective is odd thinking about Yetu’s responsibility to share the memories to her people even though they’ve caused so much suffering to her. I guess it gives artists freedom in our society
