157 solar farms were approved on British farmland in February, on leases running forty years and in some cases sixty.
What arrives:
- 4.9 gigawatts of electricity.
- £850 to £1,200 an acre a year, index-linked, to whoever owns it.
- Brown hares, which do well under panels.
What goes:
- The field, until 2066.
- 788 hectares of prime arable on one scheme alone.
- The tenant, who finds out by letter.
- The cattle. Arrays take sheep only, because cows wreck panels.
- Skylark nests recorded on British solar farms to date: none.
- The view, along an eleven-kilometre corridor in Oxfordshire alone.
They will tell you the sheep stay. A flock under panels is vegetation management, grazed at £50 to £150 an acre by a contractor running somebody else's ewes. No handling system, no lambing shed, no dog work. The farm keeps a mowing contract and loses a livestock business.
Britain's largest operational site carries over half a million panels, some near ten feet tall, behind security fence and under floodlight. Every village along it was consulted, then outvoted.
The panels come off a supply chain this country will not certify. Around 45 per cent of the world's solar-grade polysilicon comes from Xinjiang, and polysilicon is in roughly 95 per cent of modules made anywhere. Chinese government documents record 2.6 million minoritised people placed into work through labour transfer programmes.
America listed polysilicon as forced-labour goods in 2021 and stops it at the border.
Britain voted down that amendment in March 2025, reversed in April when its own backbenchers turned, and a Politico investigation then found five of seven GB Energy school contracts could not be guaranteed slavery-free. Around 68 per cent of our panels come from China. Two thirds of NHS trusts now run on them.
So the fields go, the tenancies go, the cattle go, and nobody can certify the hardware replacing them.
